Small Worlds
Target Gallery
Small Worlds is an all-media, juried exhibition with a focus on artists who work in miniature/small scales to create worlds – dioramas or sets – to be photographed or exhibited as objects themselves. The exhibition includes sculptural work as well as photography documenting these “worlds.” Our juror was New York-based artist Thomas Doyle.

Frances Gallardo: Meteorology

The deceptive beauty of Frances Gallardo’s cut-paper hurricane series belies the urgent underlying theme of climate change, which is a particular threat for her native island of Puerto Rico in the Tropics. Gallardo’s work combines exquisitely crafted cut-paper installations with conceptual performance art. Delving beneath the surface, paper serves as a metaphor for human skin and vulnerability. In celebration of the Torpedo Factory Art Center’s 40th Anniversary, Chicago-based artist Sara Black and the art duo Hideous Beast will transform the Target Gallery into a community library. Constructed from repurposed and locally sourced building materials, this community space will feature a diverse array of public programming. Julia Kwon: More Than A Body
Interdisciplinary artist Julia Kwon creates sculpture and textile art that explore reductive representation, othering, and objectification, in relation to ethnicity and gender as a Korean American woman. Memento Mori
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, “Memento mori” is the literal Latin translation for “‘remember (that you have) to die”. The purpose of this exhibition is to explore death as a concept and how it affects our lives. Through explorations of entropy/decay, ghosts and paranormal spirits, or personal experiences, this exhibit will contemplate how the inevitability of death impacts us all.

Tai Hwa Goh creates site-specific kinetic paper sculptures that bloom, but warp over time with repeated human interaction, much like artificial selection compared to the wild.
