Views of the Connection between Nature & the Urban Environment in Woodblock Print by Kristina Hagman will be on display in Printmakers Inc (Studio 325) at the Torpedo Factory Art Center from November 1 to November 21, 2017. An opening reception will be held on November 4 from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm, and there will be an artist talk on November 9 at 7:30 pm.
Printmakers Inc, a member of the Torpedo Factory Artists’ Association, is a studio and gallery dedicated to the slow art movement of making prints by hand. This exhibition is a retrospective of hand carved woodblock prints created by Hagman over the course of 15 years.
Hagman’s work is created from carving as many as seven different blocks of wood, each individually inked and printed onto a sheet of paper to create a single image. Many of the works in this exhibition pay homage to Japanese printmaker Hokusai, famous for his image of storm tossed boats clinging to the great wave that encircles Mount Fuji in the distance. This image is one of his 36 Views of Mount Fuji. Taking his example, Hagman created 36 Views of Mount Rainier; a series that has been traveling all over the US since 2010.
This seies is displayed as a large wall installation where viewers can see all 36 perspectives of the mountain on one wall. After completing the mountain views, Hagman captured and made prints of other iconic views, such as the hills of Santa Fe New Mexico, the waves of California, and is currently working on the Memorials and Monuments of Washington, DC.
