Salon: An Artful Conversation (MARCH 5 CANCELED)

CANCELED DUE TO WEATHER – SPEAKERS TO BE RE-SCHEDULED

Judith HeartSong’s Salon: An Artful Conversation is a monthly meeting of artists, writers, and arts professionals who come together to bond, network, and get out of their heads for a little while. It is a conversation, a support group, sometimes a counseling session, always a networking extravaganza, an experimental lab for new ideas, and a place to learn and grow by leaps and bounds as an artist and professional.

Salon has been running successfully in Maryland for more than three years and is now a monthly First Thursday event at the Torpedo Factory Art Center. Bring a store-bought dish to pass or beverage to share, and come be a part of the conversation!

We feature amazing speakers from the metro area and beyond who come to share their wisdom and expertise. Speakers have included:

  • Lisa Gold, Washington Project for the Arts
  • Isabel Manalo, The Studio Visit

Sara Margrethe Oskal: The Whole Caboodle

Part of Hacking Objects of Desire in the Target Gallery.

Norwegian Sámi actress Sara Margrethe Oskal’s one-woman performance, The Whole Caboodle, uses storytelling and yoiks (indigenous chanting unique to the Sámi) to tell three traditional tales in a mix of Sámi and English. Oskal draws from her indigenous roots to create a dialogue with the audience through a lighthearted show that pokes fun at taboos.

The Sámi are the indigenous people of Scandinavia, who live in the Arctic area of Sápmi, which encompasses far northern regions of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia.

Oskal, who holds a doctorate in performing arts, researched humorous traditional Sámi stories as part of her studies and create The Whole Caboodle. Her performance is divided into three sections: “The Maidie” is about a young girl, a runaway reindeer tries to escape the butcher’s knife in “Reindeer Snoop Deer,” and “Granny” features a spry 106-year-old lady.

The performance is about 70 minutes, with an intermission and is suitable for youths and adults.

This project is in partnership with the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Washington.

About Sara Margrethe Oskal

Sebastian and Shai from Maps of You

Second Thursday featuring Maps of You

Maps of You is an electronic duo based in Boston and Washington, DC. Their music is a concoction of electronic pop, soulful bass lines and funk driven beats.

Sebastian and Shai met through the Berklee College of Music’s network and hit it off musically right away. Shai focuses on the lyrics and songwriting while Sebastian is the wizard that gives the songs life through his production.

The name Maps of You is derived from the idea that everyone has an internal map guiding them through this pilgrimage called life. As you embark on your life’s journey, you will realize that music is intricately entwined into the ebb and flow.

We all have that album or song that colors our memories of that one rebellious summer, the loss of a loved one, the celebration of a new season of growth and of course love and heartbreak. And so, Maps of You seeks to create music that is a positive backdrop to your life. Music that will harmonize discordant moments, songs that will unravel your twists and turns and melodies that will ease dissonance in your journey.
