Tory Cowles was born and raised in Shelburne, Vermont, but has lived the majority of her life in Montgomery Co. Maryland. She graduated with a BA from Bennington College.
Her large abstracts explore the way colors talk to each other and change each other. She attempts to combine both spontaneity and discipline, boldness and subtlety, in such a way that both hold their own.
Tory is represented by Longview Gallery in Washington DC, and she shows widely in the mid-Atlantic region. She was chosen to be the 2011 Torpedo Factory Artist of the Year by juror Harry Cooper, Head of Modern and Contemporary Art at the National Gallery of Art. Her prices range from $2,000 for a 40" x 30" painting to $6,500 for a 60" x 72" painting.
