A zine (short for “magazine”) is a small-circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images, usually reproduced via photocopier. The current selection of zines was created by artists from TEN09 (@ten09print), a collective of printers, bookmakers, and zinesters from George Mason University’s School of Art, and curated by Christopher Kardambikis (@c.kardambikis), GMU Assistant Professor and Director of Navigation Press (@navigationpress). Participating studio artists, galleries, and project spaces will display Pride-related artwork for to celebrate the achievements the Pride movement has achieved over the years, as well as the 30th anniversary of the City of Alexandria's first Pride Month back in 1988.
In honor of National LGBTQ Pride Month and the 30th anniversary of the City of Alexandria's first Pride Month back in 1988, the Torpedo Factory Art Center celebrates the history of the LGBTQ movement with "Celebration," a photo exhibition of Pride celebrations and marches throughout the years, including rare images from the first New York City Pride March in 1970. Featuring the works of Lester Blum and Peter J. Robinson, Jr.
The Torpedo Factory Art Center stays open late until 9pm to host a special mingle in honor of the start of Capital Pride in the DC/Maryland/Virginia area and the 30th anniversary of the City of Alexandria's support of Pride Month. Stop by for music in the Grand Hall, drinks and snacks, and open artist studios and projects, including a Pride Selfie Station. Proceeds go to benefit NOVA Pride, Northern Virginia's fastest growing LGBTQ+ organization, with a mission to educate, advocate, and celebrate in service to the LGBTQ+ Community in the area.
