In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Alexandria Archaeology Museum will highlight Rose O’Neal Greenhow, Washington, D.C. socialite and Confederate spy. One of her original coded messages and exquisite hand-drawn maps of Northern Virginia will be on display. Try your hand at cracking her coded message and reveal military secrets concerning the Union defenses of Washington, D.C. City archaeologist Benjamin Skolnik will share insights into this remarkable woman and her secret mission during the Civil War.
The lectures are held in conjunction with the Torpedo Factory Art Center’s celebration of the legacy of women in the arts during the March Second Thursday Art Night. Throughout the night, visitors are encourage to participate in the broader national conversation on this subject by posting on social media with the hashtag #5womenartists, created by the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
