Hey, kids, discover how to really dig history! Alexandria Archaeology is hosting an archaeology camp this summer, and applications are now being accepted. Campers will learn professional excavating, recording, and artifact-processing methods as they help uncover Alexandria’s buried past while protecting historical resources.
Campers will assist City archaeologists at an actual excavation site at Fort Ward Park (4301 Braddock Road) in Alexandria. The site is part of a former African American neighborhood. Campers will spend Thursday in the laboratory, at the Alexandria Archaeology Museum, processing and analyzing their discoveries. On Friday, family and friends will be invited to the site for interpretive tours conducted by the campers.
The camp is open to 12 through 15 year-olds. The session runs from Monday, July 20 through Friday, July 24. The camp day starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. Campers supply their own drinks, snacks, and lunches.
The cost is $400 per session with full scholarships available. Space is limited to just 15 campers, and a non-refundable deposit of $100 is required to hold a slot. Each camper will receive a commemorative t-shirt.
