King Street Art Festival at the Torpedo Factory

September 19, 2015 @ 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm

The King Street Art Festival continues across Union Street with live music, special programming, and more than 100 artists’ work available for purchase at the Torpedo Factory Art Center.

Make something in the makerspace
Brad Halsey, CEO and founder of Building Momentum, will be showcasing a variety of new technology for creating original art including 3-D printing, robotics/electronics, soldering, laser cutting, among others. Participants will have an opportunity to decorate a souvenir to take home. This program is in partnership with The Art League. At 2 pm, Resident artist and jeweler Susan Sanders (studio 206) will demonstrate her design process for creating earrings and other jewelry via 3-D printing.

015See the Torpedo Bike in action
Kids of all ages can follow the trail of bubbles and spot the Torpedo Bike—created by Chris Erney (studio 33)—riding along the waterfront. Constructed from plywood, stainless steel, fiberglass, and aircraft-grade aluminum, the Torpedo Bike debuted at the 2014 King Street Art Festival and has quickly become a visitor favorite. This year, the Torpedo Bike is supported, in part, by Zink Shirts.Zink logo current

Dance, dance, dance
Flashback party band will liven up the afternoon with favorite classic-rock hits from the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

Be a Very Important Person
Everyone is a VIP, an interactive performance by Arlington-based artist Heloisa Escudero, allows everyone to walk the red carpet and enter the roped-section of the waterfront. Participants can mingle with the host and guest artist, flash a smile at the paparazzo, and be pampered with a special gift bag just for VIPs. The performance, which is free and open to the public, invites people to celebrate their unique qualities that mark them as individuals. By letting everyone into the VIP section, Escudero removes all rejections and exclusions in order to concentrate on self-worth as an essential part of life. The performance is funded through a grant from the Alexandria Commission for the Arts and the Office of the Arts.
