Highest Honor: Site-Specific Sculpture

Where: Studio 8 in the Torpedo Factory and in the Main Hall Public hours starting May 1: Monday to Friday, 11:30 am–12:30 pm; Saturday, 4:15–5:00 pm; Sunday, 10:00–11:00 am In collaboration with military veterans from The Art League’s IMPart program, artist and League instructor Andy Yoder will construct a site-specific, suspended, 25-ft triangular banner for the Torpedo Factory Art Center’s atrium. The Silent World: A CRAVE-funded initiative Isabel Cureux developed The Silent World as a way to explore what happens to the creative human mind as we grow older. Connecting the Dots: The DMV

In the New Project Studio, The HRCHY CIA + Merimart present an exhibition of emerging artists via Metro stops and state lines, highlighting the unique experience and identities of being a young artist in the DMV (DC/Maryland/Virginia). The project serves an an incubator for local artisans, influencers, and creatives to network, create, brainstorm, and share ideas. Closing reception Friday January 27, 7pm-9pm.

Sheryl Oring: I Wish to Say

As part of National Poetry Month, the Torpedo Factory Art Center hosts Sheryl Oring’s I Wish to Say in the New Project Studio. I Wish to Say grew out of Sheryl Oring’s concern that not enough voices were being heard about the state-of-affairs in this country and her belief in the value of free expression that is guaranteed under our Constitution. For this project, Oring sets up a portable public office – complete with a manual typewriter – and invites people to write postcards to the President.

In Our Eyes: Workshop with Shani Shih, Michelle Chen, and Chinatown Art Studio

New Project Studio artists Shani Shih and Michelle Chen present In Our Eyes, an interactive workshop series centered on the power of the arts to express identity, values, and personal/collective histories and visions. Through these workshops, the artists will 1) lead participants in reflection on the stories and experiences that have shaped who we are and who we are becoming, and 2) guide participants in the use of visual language to tell their stories. Mediums of exploration include: painting, collage, pen and ink. Each workshop is in collaboration with a separate non-profit or activist group committed to uplifting individuals in the DC/Alexandria area.
