Encaustic Endeavors

Lesley Clarke and Jamie Fine exhibit an exploration of their encaustic creations from 2017. Clarke, who typically works in acrylic and mixed media, and Fine, who is a ceramist, have been working on creating encaustic work every Thursday for several months. Their year-end show in TAG highlights their individual and collaborative work thus far. A reception for the exhibition will be on Thursday, January 11 from 5:00 pm – 7:30 pm.

Ars memoria, or the art of memory, associates emotionally striking and memorable images within a body of text. They have often be used in the study of architecture, law, medicine, and the arts. Jolande Goldberg shares an overview of the law book illustrations and the Law Library of Congress’s efforts to preserve this history.

Torpedo Talks: Diaspora in African-American Art @ Second Thursday Art Night

A talk by Kayleigh Bryant-Greenwell, independent curator, public programmer, and activist. In collaboration with Target Gallery’s Passages exhibition, Kayleigh Bryant-Greenwell, discusses the effects and influence of diaspora in African-American art.

Second Thursday Reception with Artist Demos

February 8 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Join us for the reception of pour on Second Thursday! Both featured artists will be demonstrating their unique processes on this night. Painter Jennifer Brewer Stone demonstrates her poured resin paintings. Brewer Stone’s pieces combine honey-like resin, sometimes in multiple layers, acrylic paint, and metallic pigment. The resin flows over the surface like water and cannot be controlled entirely–similar to nature. Certain colors bloom within the resin or create cells, replicating natural elements. Torpedo Talks: Comic Book Films

Christopher Irving, comic book and popular-culture historian for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, reveals the origins of comic books and how they have translated into film and TV over the decades. It showcases everything from the 1940s movie serials to the current blockbuster movies out today and how both media have helped change one another.  Featured are the classic Adventures of Superman TV show, Batman with Adam West from the 1960s, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the current DC Comics shows on network television.
