SUMMARY:Alexandria Community Art Library
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the Torpedo Factory Art Center’s 40th Anniversary\, Chicago-based artist Sara Black and the art duo Hideous Beast will transform the Target Gallery into a community library. Constructed from repurposed and locally sourced building materials\, this community space will feature a diverse array of public programming. While on the one hand serving to archive and share TFAC’s rich history as a creative place\, the exhibition also questions newly emerging modes of both art making and arts funding.

DESCRIPTION:North Carolina-based artist Steven Walls explores the collective unconscious in his solo exhibition Transient States. SUMMARY:Hacking Objects of Desire
DESCRIPTION:In Hacking Objects of Desire\, JoarNango\, Silje Figenschou Thoresen\, and Sigbjørn Skåden incorporate indigenous design traditions and pragmatism into contemporary work. The exhibition of photographs\, sculpture\, and video draw from a previous collaborative project\, Indigenuity\, which presented a detailed survey of the Sámi worldview and resilience expressed through do-it-yourself ethos\, creative knowledge\, invention and improvisation. \nThe Sámi people are the indigenous people of Scandinavia\, who live in the Arctic area of Sápmi\, which encompasses far northern regions of Norway\, Sweden\, Finland\, and Russia. \nThe exhibition takes on new context—particularly when located so close to national and international policy makers in the Northern Virginia and greater Washington\, D.C. area—as a critical statement about globalism\, consumerism\, and commercialism. \nThe opening celebration will be Saturday\, September 6 from 3 – 5 pm\, with a curatorial presentation with Kade Twist at 4 pm. \nThis exhibition is in partnership with the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Washington.

DESCRIPTION:Public Reception:\nThursday\, December 11\, 6 – 8 pm; Gallery Talk with Kayleigh Bryant-Greenwell\, 7 pm \n  \nIn a new Target Gallery exhibition\, artists were challenged to express themselves in a work of art that is no larger than five inches in any direction. 5×5(x5) is an all-media exhibition featuring little works that make a big impact. \n“As a grouping\, the artwork on view in this exhibition is a study in modernity across many voices\,” said Kayleigh Bryant-Greenwell\, guest juror for 5×5(x5). “These small works present an array of contexts. Some artists focused heavily on technique and other delved into contemporary issues\, touching upon issues of race and sexuality. She implements professional development seminars\, as well as a residency program for local emerging artists with Strathmore Hall in North Bethesda. An arts writer\, her work has been featured in The Washington Times\, Examiner.com\, CBS Local DC online\, Brightest Young Things\, and Plinth\, among others. She has worked with many cultural institutions including the Smithsonian Institution\, the Walters Art Museum\, the National Archives\, the David C. Driskell Center at the University of Maryland\, College Park\, the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities and the Annual Downtown Hyattsville Arts Festival. She serves as program chair for the Washington\, D.C. region of ArtTable\, Inc.\, events chair for Emerging Arts Leaders D.C.\, and the Young Patrons Committee of Torpedo Art Factory in Alexandria\, Virginia. His paintings are in private and public collections throughout the world\, including The Rockford Art Museum in Rockford\, Illinois and in U.S. embassies in the Philippines and Panama. Reviews of his work have been featured in numerous publications\, including The Washington Post\, The Washington Times\, The New York Times\, Juxtapos\, The New Art Examiner\, as well as a feature on CNBC. Some awards received include The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Fellowship (Canada)\, The Jacob Kainen Award for Excellence in Figurative Painting\, a Maryland State Arts Council grant and The Ethel Lorraine Bernstein Memorial Award for Excellence in Painting. Huntington is currently an adjunct faculty member at the Corcoran in Washington\, DC. SUMMARY:Eunsook Lee: Dispersed Family
DESCRIPTION:Korean artist Eunsook Lee transforms the Target Gallery with her site-specific work\, Dispersed Family. With this installation\, Lee explores what it means to be a family maintaining connections across the globe. She uses black-light-sensitive threads\, resulting in a dramatic fluorescent palette. The glow-in-the-dark threads represent relationships that are both continuous\, yet free in their own space. She weaves them together with layers of letters\, photographs\, and seeds to represent the hope for possibilities and regrets of separation. \nThis exhibition is the first of Target Gallery’s new annual Special Exhibition series. \nOpening Reception: Saturday\, April 18 • 3-5 pm • Artist Talk at 4 pm

Kari Van Tine dances with a charred staff\, engaging her whole body in what is both a war dance and a dance of seduction to create her site-inspired floor drawings. Heather Lyon pairs rebar with delicate\, more ephemeral materials to create sculptures that are both goddess-like and soldierly. Anya Antonovych’s accidental cell phone photos transform extreme close-up images of flesh into the abstract and ethereal. \nAntonovych curated this exhibition\, which was selected by juror Laura Roulet\, through Target Gallery’s first Open Call for Curatorial Proposals. “I am especially pleased that this exhibition will be on view in the Torpedo Factory\,” said Antonovych. “Both the subject matter and the site\, historically speaking\, involve women\, making\, and power.”

SUMMARY:2015 Post-Graduate Residents
DESCRIPTION:Public Reception: Thursday\, Nov 12\, 6 – 8 pm; Artists Conversation at 7 pm\nTo wrap up the inaugural year of the Torpedo Factory Art Center’s post-graduate in-house residency program\, the Target Gallery will feature the work of the four participating artists in a group exhibition. \nThe Torpedo Factory Post-Graduate Master’s of Fine Arts Residency is a competitive program\, housed in Studio 12\, where the four participating artists had an opportunity to create and sell their work\, interact with the public\, and network with other working artists. The inaugural 2015 cohort of artists selected for the residency were: Stephanie Booth\, Justin Raphael Roykovich\, Steven Skowron\, and Jenny Wu. \nIn the exhibition\, Booth references the trials of her family’s ancestors\, who were Quakers banished by Puritans in the 15th century. She appropriates family stories\, and genealogies to highlight the instability of memory. Personal recollections and family histories\, though inaccurate\, connect people to the past while tethering them to the present. \nHaving grown up in a haunted house as a child\, Roykovich is fascinated with the workings of the universe and the fleeting nature of lived experiences. For example\, through quantum physics\, we learn that time is not linear\, but the past\, present\, and future are congruent. Roykovich explores environmental memory surrounding the Torpedo Factory in his work\, collecting and displaying photographs\, news clips\, and other media to create a physical\, interpretive recollection. These seemingly random and meaningless bits of data are combined with an device that captures electronic voice phenomenon to communicate with the spirit realm in an effort to create a complete history of the Torpedo Factory and bring it to life. \nSkowron’s work explore the intersections of ritual\, isolation\, masculinity\, trauma\, and the numinous by isolating form from flesh\, light from dark\, immaterial from temporal. His contribution is in two parts. In the first portion\, Is My Work Art or a Commodity?\, viewers may fill out a card and take a copy of a hand-pulled print. Payment is voluntary and based on what the perceived value is. Once the print is gone\, the completed card will take its place on the wall. The second portion\, Water Series\, features photography to explore the divine and points to something larger in our consciousness of the world around us. \nWu uses everyday materials to create her playful and interactive installations. During her time at the Torpedo Factory\, she unraveled hundreds of cassettes and encouraged people to play in the room-sized pile of magnetic tape. She thinks of her work as a sensory and perceptual playground\, encouraging viewers to experience her installations as a child would\, with all of their senses engaged. In the exhibition\, one of Wu’s works\, Selfie Wall\, is a collection of colorful framed mirrors. The audience is invited to interact with her work by posting photos with hashtag #TFselfiewall. By creating a memorable impressions\, the art continues to live within her audience long after the exhibition has closed. \nAbout the Artists\nStephanie Booth‘s interdisciplinary practice integrates digital photography\, printmaking\, video\, and fiber art techniques to investigate the connections between memory and history. She has exhibited her work nationally and internationally\, including galleries in New York; Chicago; Washington\, D.C.; Toronto; and China. Booth received her MFA in art and visual technology from George Mason University and has taught art at George Mason\, Northern Virginia Community College\, and The College of Southern Maryland. She is currently a visiting assistant professor of art at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Booth attended Mary Washington College and graduated with honors in 2004\, earning a bachelor’s in studio art and art history. \nJustin Raphael Roykovich’s work focuses on the intersections between entertainment\, media\, technology\, and identity construction within modern American society\, with particular emphasis on sexuality and masculinity. He works across disciplines—most notably in video\, photography\, and printmaking— and combines media to create new narratives within our popular culture. Roykovich received his MFA in visual art from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in 2014. Previously\, he earned his bachelor’s degree in art and visual technology from George Mason University and graduated with honors. \nSteven Skowron is a printmaker whose work has been shown nationally and internationally. He has received various awards and has work in permanent collections\, including at the Library of Congress. Skowron holds an MFA from George Mason University and currently teaches printmaking at American University and George Mason University\, where he was president of the GMU Printmakers Guild. He recently completed a summer lithography residency at the Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque\, New Mexico. \nJenny Wu was born in Nanjing\, China. Wu has participated in numerous Artist-In-Residence programs across the country\, and has been awarded fellowships from Vermont Studio Center and the Pollock Krasner Foundation. Her work has been exhibited in galleries including Denise Bibro in New York and the Katzen Museum at American University. She earned her MFA from American University and holds a bachelor’s from William Smith College in studio art and architectural studies. She currently lives in Washington\, D.C.

DESCRIPTION:Women Do It!\, is the mail art exhibition of WCA’s International Caucus and its UN Program. Individual artists\, mail artists\, students\, children\, activists and concerned individuals of all genders and ages as well as classrooms and organizations were invited to create altered or hand-made postcards for the traveling Women Do It! postcard show. The exhibition is hosted in partnership by the Target Gallery and the Women’s Caucus for Art as an extension of Trending: Contemporary Art Now! which is part of WCA’s 2016 national conference in Washington\, D.C. The exhibition is located in Site 2 on the second floor of the Torpedo Factory Art Center. \n”Women Do It!” was inspired by and highlights the work of  UN Women’s HeForShe campaign\, its Beijing+20 program and  in their efforts toward advancing women’s rights and gender equality in society\, economics and politics. \nThe Women’s Caucus for Art (WCA)\, was founded in 1972\, as an arts & activism non-profit that is still led by volunteer members. The exhibition is part of WCA’s 2016 national conference in Washington\, D.C. \nTrending features work by 12 self-identified women who are driving the direction of contemporary art. It offers a cross-section of media to reflect the leading edge of contemporary art\, including video\, collage\, 3D photography\, found objects\, installation\, and more. \n“The exhibition title immediately brought to mind hashtag culture\, where anything that is au courant can be quickly digested\,” said Elizabeth K. Garvey\, juror for this exhibition. “We are bombarded by so much imagery that our time is often spent quickly scanning rather than closely looking. I saw this exhibition as a small opportunity to reaffirm the importance of digging deeper and looking longer.” \nGarvey\, co-founder and owner of Garvey Simon Art Access in New York City\, selected more than one piece by each artist\, concentrating on artists whose work is unified and consistent. All work in the show is priced at $150\, but during the Art Party on March 18\, work is priced at $100. All proceeds benefit Target Gallery. \nBuy Tickets to the Art Party \nMarch150 is a low-pressure environment for artists and patrons alike. This encourages new art collectors to buy their first original work\, introduces more veteran collectors to new local artists\, and allows artists to test the waters with a new technique or subject. \nTarget Gallery raised more than $11\,000 in 2015 and is hoping to exceed that this year!

DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: April 16 – May 29 \nReception: Saturday\, April 16 • 3 – 5 pm • Artist Talk at 4 pm  \nAlways into Now is both an environmental sculpture and a painting in space. Using silk organza in a painterly process\, she sews thousands of bulbous shapes and creates structures that seem to grow from the walls and ceiling. \nThe work is immersive\, yet intimate\, and will envelop the entire gallery in a room-sized singular form. Maine-based Lisa Kellner plays with the translucency of the organza to further cast color and shadows across the walls\, floors\, and viewers\, inviting them to become part of the painting. \nThis is the first exhibition as part of Target Gallery’s New Media Invitational\, which invites artists to transform the space with a site-specific installation.

SUMMARY:Materialized Magic: Fiber Art Workshop
DESCRIPTION:“Materialized Magic” is a community art project that provides free lessons\, for people of all levels of experience\, in crocheting\, knitting\, and felting. Erika Cleveland and Stacy Cantrell launched their CRAVE-sponsored “Materialized Magic” project in 2015. \nParticipants help create a magical “Yarn Bomb” habitat and also have a chance to be featured with the key artists. After the sessions\, the leftover materials and supplies will be donated to the community through nursing homes\, community centers\, and non-profit organizations. \nThe Target Gallery will be hosting the workshop on Thursdays: February 4\, April 7\, and May 5 from 6-9 pm.

DESCRIPTION:Public Reception: Thursday\, June 9 • 6 – 8 pm • Gallery Talk at 7 pm\nTarget Gallery\, the contemporary exhibition space for the Torpedo Factory Art Center\, encourages people to touch\, feel\, dine upon\, and even lick the artwork in Please Touch. \nSixteen national and international artists\, including four people from Virginia\, were juried into this group show. This all-media exhibition features 20 works with which audiences should engage. \n“I chose work that specifically challenged the traditional expectation of experiencing art\,” said Cynthia Connolly\, Arlington County’s special projects curator and juror for the exhibition. “In this case\, one must touch the artwork in order to completely understand\, appreciate and experience the intention of the artist.” \nFor example\, Colleen Ludwig’s Pod Field is a series of wooden forms affixed with long pod stalks. The audience is invited to brush against the pods as they walk through the installation\, triggering the bamboo chimes. The more people in the space\, the more it fills the industrial surroundings of the Torpedo Factory with sound\, reminiscent of insects in nature. \nJeni Hansen Gard’s Project Share is two ceramic dish sets and a social art project. One set stays in Target Gallery for display\, the other is for visitors to borrow and use for a meal with a stranger. There is no fee for this project\, participants are merely asked to snap a few photos and write a blog entry. (See the blog from a similar project in Columbus\, Ohio.) The dishes are a vehicle to engage in conversation over the intimate act of sharing food. \nFumi Amano\, of Richmond\, Virginia\, created one of the most intimate works in the show with Look at Me. An immigrant from Japan\, Amano’s work is a reflection of her sense of isolation and the challenges of connecting with others through a language barrier. In her work\, visitors sit on opposite sides of a frosted pane of glass\, unable to see each other. The person on the frosted side then licks the pane\, revealing a face. She graduated from both the Corcoran College of Art and Design\, and Auburn University’s Rural Studio\, worked for Dischord Records and booked an avant-garde performance venue\, d.c. space. In 1988\, she published Banned in DC: Photos and Anecdotes from the DC Punk Underground (79-86) through her independent press Sun Dog Propaganda. Internationally shown and a prolific artist\, her photographic work\, postcards\, and books were exhibited in Beautiful Losers in the United States and Europe from 2004-2009 establishing herself as a pioneer in DIY culture. Reviewed internationally\, her photography is in many private collections\, as well as the J. Paul Getty Museum\, Smithsonian Museum of American History and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. She was the visual arts curator of Artisphere and continues as Arlington County’s special projects curator.

SUMMARY:Wade Kramm: Dotted Space
DESCRIPTION:Public Reception: Thursday\, August 11 • 6 – 8 pm • Artist Talk with Wade Kramm at 7 pm\nTarget Gallery\, the contemporary exhibition space for the Torpedo Factory Art Center\, presents Wade Kramm’s exploration of human perception in Dotted Space. \nDotted Space features site-specific installations and a series of artist pop-up books that use dotted lines to demarcate rectilinear spaces. When viewed from a particular angle\, the dotted lines seem like three-dimensional shapes\, some of which appear to penetrate and continue through the gallery walls. The viewer must physically move about in the gallery to perceive Kramm’s invisible planes\, creating a subtle revelation with each new form. \nHis work combines minimalism with architecture and perception to reshape the space in which audiences engage. By materializing planes and spaces out of the void\, he invites viewers to reassess the very confines of the built environment. \nNamed as the 2016 Open Exhibition solo artist\, Pennsylvania-based Kramm was selected by jurors Phil Hutinet\, publisher of East City Art\, and photojournalist Victoria Milko. In his career\, he has received several prestigious grants\, including the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant and Artist Resource Trust Grant. Kramm also held residencies at institutions such as Takt Berlin\, Vermont Studio Center\, and the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh. His work has been on view in the U.S. and abroad at venues such as the Carnegie Museum of Art\, Pittsburgh; Athens Contemporary Museum of Art\, Georgia; Sammer Gallery\, New York; Clint Roenisch Gallery\, Toronto; Esther M. Klein Art Gallery\, Philadephia; Mine Factory Gallery\, Pittsburgh; Piero Atchugarry Gallery\, Uraguay; Kent State University\, Ohio; and Tapir Gallery\, Delaware. He is represented by Piero Atchugarry Gallery. \nAbout the Jurors\nPhil Hutinet\, a third generation Capitol Hill resident\, is the publisher of East City Art which he began in 2010 to document and promote the growing contemporary art movement in the eastern communities of Washington\, D.C. In 2012-2013\, his consultancy work east of the river yielded the Anacostia Playhouse\, Craig Kraft Studios\, the Anacostia Arts Center\, and the 2012-2013 LUMEN8ANACOSTIA festivals. He currently produces EMULSION\, East City Art’s annual regional juried show. In 2015\, he coordinated the Gateway Open Studio Tour and continues to consult on numerous regional art projects. Hutinet has been interviewed by or has made appearances on the BBC\, Capital Community News\, Washingtonian\, Washington City Paper\, The Washington Post\, WOL Radio\, WJLA\, WTOP and other local and national media. \nVictoria Milko is a freelance writer and multimedia journalist based in Washington\, D.C. She is a member of the Women Photojournalists of Washington and the National Press Photographers Association. Her sense of adventure and passion for storytelling has taken her from the back rooms of underground sex clubs in Washington\, D.C.\, to illegal abortion sites in Myanmar. Between assignments\, Victoria is earning her master’s degree in multiplatform journalism from the University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism. She also curates the work of local artists in her studio\, Wild Hand Workspace.
