DESCRIPTION:Art Impact USA’s second annual art exhibition celebrating Caribbean-American Heritage Month. \nThis exhibition in Sites 2 and 3 showcases 20 artists who have been inspired by the Caribbean\, either being from the region or having Caribbean background or affiliation. Thirty-six beautiful works of art give voice to the artists’ humanity and spirit of jubilee. SUMMARY:A Dream Within a Dream: Madness
DESCRIPTION:On view in Sites 2 & 3\nThe stage is set for the theatrical production of A Dream Within a Dream in Sites 2 & 3 (hallway by the elevators on the 2nd and 3rd floors). \nSite 2 is imagined to be the poems The Raven and Dream Within a Dream. The curved wall has a variety of clocks and vintage mirrors along with works by TFAA artists Guy Jones and Greenway. \nSite 3 is based on the short story Eleonora and has eight large floral paintings by Niki Pickett (338). \n\nAbout the Play\nThe Torpedo Factory Artists’ Association commissioned Through the 4th Wall for a site-specific\, interactive theatrical production. \nA Dream Within a Dream: Madness is a surreal interpretation of the life\, works\, and mad genius of Edgar Allan Poe. The year is 1849 and since the death of his wife\, Virginia\, Poe has become increasingly unhinged. He’s been all over the city\, seemingly disoriented\, possibly inebriated\, reciting passages from his darkest of works—and always searching for his beloved. The audience becomes part of the story\, interacting with characters and traveling with Poe between waking and dreaming\, sanity and madness. \nTickets are on sale now. SUMMARY:Emerge
DESCRIPTION:Students from Emerge\, an Art League school painting class led by Marsha Staiger\, work with personal ideas\, places\, feelings\, and life stories to create a body of work. The challenge for “emerge” is to look inside outside think ponder create think ponder look outside and inside to create art that is true to each person. DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: December 8\, 2016-January 8 2017 \nReception Date: Thursday\, December 8 • 6-8pm • Artist Talk at 6:30pm \nWomen’s Work is an exhibition that celebrates women artists who embrace womanhood and the power of women. The phrase “women’s work” refers to “the work that is believed to be exclusively the domain of women and associates particular tasks with the female gender.”  \nMoving beyond this stigma\, female artists Naomi Christianson\, Julie Dzikiewicz\, Lizzy Lunday\, and Fierce Sonia challenge the traditional role of women. They do this not only in their professions as artists but also in their unique artistic styles\, subject matter\, and mediums such as oil\, encaustic printed paper\, and acrylic. This exhibition was curated by Target Gallery intern\, Genevieve Keillor.  \nThis exhibition is on view in Site 3 in the Torpedo Factory Art Center on the third floor.

DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: December 8\, 2016-January 8\, 2017\nReception Date: Thursday\, January 12 • 6-8:30 pm • Artist Talk at 8 pm\nLocation: Site 2 ( Second Floor Landing) \n\n\nEthiopian painter Daniel Taye returns to the Torpedo Factory to display the work he’s been inspired to create based on his travels in Alexandria. \nYou may remember Taye\, as he was in the New Project Studio this past summer. He has channeled his uninhibited flow of thought and rare perspective into capturing daily life in our city. \nFind his work in Site 2\, located in the hallway by the elevators. Hear him speak about his work during Second Thursday Art Night\, January 12\, at 8 pm. \n\nTaye is known for his evocative landscape and figurative work as he experiments with different mediums\, color composition and depth. He has been described as an artist who inspired more puzzled expressions than praise\, but his uninhibited flow of thought and rare perspective are ultimately his forte. Taye’s paintings do not fit the usual categories of Ethiopian fine art\, traditional religious art\, or abstract impressionism\, but the strokes and the enchanting color schemes over the canvas bring his work to life. \nTaye grew up involved with the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and eventually became a deacon. The church played an important role in his education and was the cornerstone of his formative years. He entered the Addis Ababa School of Fine Arts in the late 1980s\, and graduated with Distinction in 1990. He worked on the Gold Mine Documentation Project for the Ministry of Mining until 1993. His art has been exhibited in numerous venues throughout Ethiopia such as the National Museum\, Goethe Institute\, and Italian Cultural Institute. His work has also been showcased in the United States\, Europe\, and Africa.

SUMMARY:Farm to Fashion: Agricouture
DESCRIPTION:Farm to Fashion | Exhibition in Site 2\nExhibition Date:\nJanuary 29\, 2018—March 26\, 2018\nOpening Reception:\nFriday\, February 23\, 2018 | 7pm – 9pm\nFarm to Fashion is a public art challenge exhibit created by the Loudoun Arts Council\, Loudoun Economic Development\, and Franklin Park Arts Center to forge new connections between the agriculture and arts communities in Loudoun County. As part of the Rural Economic Development Council’s “Loudoun VA Grown\, Loudoun VA Made” initiative\, F2F worked to raise public awareness of the rich resources — both cultural and agricultural — in this part of Virginia. \nArtists were challenged to create a work of “agri-couture” sculpture using products and equipment sourced from Loudoun’s farms and agricultural businesses. Mannequins were created with one of a kind ceramic faces made by Loudoun artist Amy Manson. The scarecrow-like figures included stable apple crate bases so artists could display their creations for this unusual fashion show (some artists created their own mannequins for the challenge). \nLoudoun’s farms and agricultural businesses contributed the raw materials used to create the sculptures\, from baling twine to irrigation tape\, from wool roving to wine barrel staves\, from grape vines to pumpkin seeds. Each artist created an initial proposal\, and their concepts evolved throughout the summer as the pieces were actually created. The proposals were displayed alongside the finished pieces to demonstrate how the creative process works. The pieces reflect different ideas about the idea of “Fashion” including practical garments and wildly imaginative tableaux. \nThis show was originally exhibited at Franklin Park Arts Center in Purcellville\, Virginia in October 2017. Farm to Fashion was met with an enthusiastic response from hundreds of visitors. In response\, the Loudoun Arts Council and Rural Economic Development Council are planning new joint initiatives to bring Loudoun’s artists and farmers together. \nRSVP\n

DESCRIPTION:On View in Site 2 Community Gallery\nOFF THE GRID: Creating Change Through Art Instruction & Inspiration\nReception: Friday\, July 20 7 – 9pm\, with opening remarks at 7:30pm\n“Off the Grid” is an exhibition featuring the artwork created by Northern Virginia inmates under the volunteer instruction of Kelli Schollard-Sincock (aka Ms. Kelli) of ‘Inspiration Matterz’. The students in Ms. Kelli’s classes range in age\, background\, and experience\, most having never drawn before. She uses a step-by-step process utilizing a griding system to teach the basics in observation and interpretation of line\, tone and texture. The artwork displayed in this exhibition is just a small sampling of an enormous body of work that has been produced over the past year by her students. She began developing her art curriculum at the Alexandria Detention Center on a trial run in 2017. Within a year her program has grown to include the Fairfax Country Adult Detention Center now serving approximately 85+ students per week. Kelli began this program as a way to give back to her community and to teach self-empowerment through tangible working skills. As much as she enjoys seeing the beautiful work produced by her students\, her greatest sense of fulfillment is witnessing the pride in accomplishment by her students and ultimately to watch them become teachers themselves. Teaching art within the jail system poses many challenges including restrictions on materials and tools. Both the Alexandria and Fairfax facilities have been extremely encouraging and cooperative in aiding the program to grow and develop. Since its inception\, the Inspiration Matterz art courses has worked with well over 200+ students. Kelli is a certified Forensic Sketch Artist through the Stuart Parks Forensics Associates. She holds a Bachelor’s of Art degree in Interdisciplinary Art from the University of Washington\, and has recently completed the Bachelor of Fines Art’s program in Printmaking at George Mason University. \nAbout Inspiration Matterz\nInspiration Matterz is the brainchild of Kelli Schollard-Sincock and is currently in the works to become a non-profit with the intention of serving the less fortunate within her community through art instruction. She is indebted to and greatly humbled by the support she has received from her community through donation of materials\, legal services\, monetary support\, and the provision of classroom opportunities from so many people including: The Alexandria Detention Center\, The Fairfax County Adult Detention Center\, The Del Ray Artisans\, The Reston Buy Nothing Group\, Cooley LLP Legal Services\, Thomas J. SUMMARY:Healing the Body
DESCRIPTION:On View in Site 2 Community Gallery\nHealing the Body\nInteractive Art Project will take place during the November Late Shift event:\nFriday\, November 9\, 7 – 10\nThe Torpedo Factory Art Center is proud to present Healing the Body\, a group exhibition of abstract figure paintings that were created by participants in Healing the Body workshops taught by Ashley Dequilla. The workshops were aimed to promote painting as a mental wellness tool accessible to everyone\, especially marginalized communities and or persons who have experienced trauma. Participants are encouraged to use movement\, art-making\, body-centered mindfulness practices\, and women’s community as the main healing modalities. This is a support group that is meant to be fun\, joyful\, as well as deep\, effective and enrichening. Students were also encouraged to engage in relaxed discussions and meditations on feminist approaches to figuration and tactility in art. Through person-centered reflection and group conversation\, students are encouraged to discuss their abstract creations and to “verbalize the narrative” represented by the works. \nBy the end of the workshops\, students have been:\n● Introduced to experiences of bodily awareness and haptic memory\n● Worked toward embodied and idiosyncratic articulations of the figure\n● Explored painting as a meditative practice towards self-awareness\, healing and transformation.\n● Reflected on the limitations of traditional figuration techniques\n● Gained knowledge about and exposure to various art historical movements and works\, especially those by women artists\, including potential class meetings at a museum\n● Gained comfort and confidence with intuitive painting\, which will be emphasized over technical ability\, relying on color theory and painting for the sake of expression \nArtworks will rotate throughout the duration of the exhibition. \nDonate to Healing the Body\nFor Inquiries on the Exhibition\nContact: Leslie Mounaime\, Target Gallery Director\nEmail: leslie.mounaime@alexandriava.gov\nPhone: 703-746-4590 \n\nAbout the Curator\nAshley Dequilla is an artist\, educator and activist based in Washington DC who was trained at the College of William and Mary and the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her paintings explore storytelling through archetypes and mythology\, as well as spirituality\, political views\, the condition of the woman’s body and psychological landscapes. Ashley currently works to provide art programming and education with local organizations such as the Jung Society of Washington\, the Asian Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Resource Project\, and The Sanctuaries — a non profit for artist activists. In the summer of 2018\, she launched Healing the Body\, a series of art and wellness workshops that aims to un-silence and empower its participants. In her free time she enjoys yoga\, museums\, cooking and her cat Midnight. \nAbout Healing the Body\nCreated in 2018\, Healing the Body is a series of a classes and workshops that aims to unsilence and empower its participants by using approaches to painting and drawing the body that do not rely on the gendered gaze typical of traditional figure painting. Built on an understanding of art as a wellness tool\, Healing the Body serves as an informal support group\, encouraging community building and open and safe discussion of the body within art and society. \n“Our long-term objective is to heal at an inter-generational level through meditation and art\, as well as create programming with organizations and/or partners that support people with disorders\, addictions or disabilities. Victims of abuse\, marginalized communities and at-risk youth are also peoples that we plan to serve and support. We are an organization of artists\, creatives and visionaries — not therapists — but we are expanding and believe that healing is not a field that can be commoditized or solely inhabited by medical professionals. Dozens of artists lead budding arts enthusiasts in hands-on projects throughout the building. Children should wear clothing that can get a little dirty. Most activities are appropriate for ages 5 – 11. Some parental participation may be required. \nRSVP on Facebook\n  \n\nAbout Site Three Project Gallery\nThe Torpedo Factory Art Center will activate the third floor Site 3 space by exhibiting its roster of artists (and tenant organization’s roster). The Site Three Project Gallery offers a compelling exhibition space to Art Center artists for a duration of two to three months. The goal of Site Three Project Gallery is to give our artists with more creative opportunities such as participate in collaborative exhibitions\, display a larger body of work\, and curate eligible artist’s work.

Factory Figures features figural artwork of diverse media by the Torpedo Factory Art Center artists. The exhibition was curated by Chris Cardellino (Studio 313). \nParticipating Artists: \nVeronica Barker-Barzel (Studio 320)\nChristine Cardellino (Studio 313)\nBerit Estabrook (Studio 330)\nAvis Fleming (Studio 325)\nEd McCluney (Studio 325)\nBarbara Muth (Associate Artist)\nCharlene Nield ( Studio 316)\nAnn Pickett (Studio 316)\nDrew Parris (Studio 307)\nBev Ryan (Studio 333)\nLisa Schumaier (Studio 16)\nAnna Yakubovskaya (Studio 302) \n  \nCurator’s Statement:\n“This exhibition is an opportunity to showcase some of the figurative artwork being created in Torpedo Factory studios every day.  Due to limited space\, the focus has been narrowed to works in painting\, drawing and printmaking that are dominated by the full figure.  Still\, it includes a wide range of media and treatment as Factory artists explore the pictorial possibilities inherent in the human figure. \nOn these walls\, Drew Parris’ quiet\, contemplative “Figure in Blue and Silver”\, a drawing in silverpoint\, contrasts with Charlene Nield’s and Ann Pickett’s exuberant mixed media collaboration\, “8th at V”.  Three pieces examine contemporary life: Bev Ryan’s oil painting “Banshee” aims for the social-psychological dimension; Barbara Muth uses broad color fields to reflect on personal relationships in “Poolside Chat”; and Ed McCluney’s overhead view captures the energy of the moment in the linoleum relief print entitled “Rush Hour”. \nIn Berit Estabrook’s mysterious painting “Believe”\, the dark figure seems to be both there and not there.  Anna Yakubovskaya’s graceful silk painting “Wishing Star” is a magical narrative. Veronica Barker-Barzel playfully abstracts the female nude in her relief print “Evening Friend”\, while Avis Fleming’s lithographic piece\, “Female Figures”\, revels in line and gesture\, and reflects a lifetime of experience drawing from the model. Punctuating the exhibit is one sculptural piece: Lisa Schumaier’s irresistible automata “The Faces We Show”\, which reminds us that we and the world we inhabit have more than three dimensions. \nThough broad and deep\, this small exhibition is only a taste of the figurative artwork that can be found in the Torpedo Factory.  I hope it encourages the viewer to explore all the corners of the Art Center.” \n— Christine Cardellino \nImage: Charlene Nield and Anne Pickett\, 8th and V\, acrylic and mixed media on panel.
