SUMMARY:The Associates Gallery March exhibit – FOUR
DESCRIPTION:In this second month-long exhibit of The Associates Gallery or TAG\, “FOUR” showing in March in studio 319 brings together painters Jill Finsen and Barbara Muth\, Kara Hammond presenting a series of graphite drawings\, with digital photographer Julie Patrick to celebrate four associate artists across four weeks revealing four truths about the formation of self-expression utilizing four unique palettes. \nPainter Jill Finsen quests for constant artistic evolution. In a recent profile in the Art and the City section of the February edition of The Hill Rag she discusses “finding the suggestion of the original reality.” She uses a palette knife to create distinct and whimsical explorations on the surface of the canvas\, seeking both composition and color to balance forms in a style that alludes to the works of the early 20th century American painters and Fauvists. “My paintings\,” she notes\, “embody a tension between familiarity and abstraction\, drawing viewers in\, yet leaving unresolved their placement within the imagined space.” \nArtist Kara Hammond’s graphic works focus on isolated instances where natural forces intersect with the built environment to reveal unexpected alliances between technology and the flora and fauna. Even in the current state of a degraded pastoral ideal\, our surroundings remain latent with unseen existences. By isolating and examining specific interactions through artistic observation\, one can see the profound changes humans have made on the landscape and how nature persistently resists our sisyphean efforts to control it. ) \nPainter Barbara Muth is a people watcher\, transferring these scenes to canvas. Her dramatic pieces tell portions of made up stories and contrivances about her subject’s lives\, their emotions\, and the dynamics of their relationships vis-a-vis each other.  Muth’s abstract forms are expressions of her interactions with the world around her.  “In general I prefer to leave very few cues about place and time in my works\, enabling the viewer to create their own stories about what is happening.  They become a personal inkblot of sorts\, a tool for the viewer to glimpse within themselves as look at the work.” \nDigital photographer Julie Patrick paints with light\, slowing down moments to the infinitesimal degree to showcase the dynamic palette of colors created through the interplay of light on water. She seeks in her abstract presentations to blur the viewer’s perception of photography with work reminiscent of paintings\, stained glass and other mixed media. Her personal theme is serenity in chaos. \nJoin these artists daily 11am to 6pm in The Associates Gallery from Monday\, March 2 through Sunday\, March 29th in Studio 319.

SUMMARY:New TAG exhibit\, "Layers\," opens March 30
DESCRIPTION:Come see the new TAG exhibit\, “Layers\,” opening on March 30. The artists reveal the depths of their art\, which they achieve through layers of colors\, lines\, patterns\, and images. \nCeramic artist Bev Andrews creates vessels of varying shapes often having lids with unique handles sometimes incorporating stones or wood. To achieve her unique forms and to add character to her work\, she often layers clay\, color\, and patterns. Her goal is to create pieces that are complex but still maintain simplicity and grace. She has embraced the same concepts in her beaded art jewelry\, which also will be on display. \nAs an artist versed in drawing\, mixed media and painting\, Ann Noel refuses to pigeon-hole herself in any one artistic form. She is known for her portraits\, figurative\, abstract\, still life and landscapes. \nSome tools and techniques speak to the art form. As a fine art photographer specializing in black and white film\, Jo Ann Tooley opts to use her trusty medium format camera. Many of her images reflect isolation and solitude. Certain scenes\, especially ones she remembers from her youth—flowers growing wild in open fields\, empty roads with sun filtering through the trees\, or a lone tree sitting in the middle of a field—evoke strong feelings that she tries to recapture with her camera. In each of her vignettes her images peel back a layer of our understanding about landscape and emotion. \nSeveral images on view at the TAG Gallery by Gail Spencer Saour are part of her continuing “Oil Can Series”. Her use of oil pastel and cold wax reveals a ruddy\, rich sometimes murky surface. Beginning with a gestural contour drawing she adds rich\, dense color continuing with layers of wax and pastel. In addition to her technique\, the images depict a depth of character as suggested in their quirky titles and humorous\, almost human\, point of view. \nLayers will be shown March 30 through April 26. Open daily 11am-6pm in The Associates Gallery in studio 319 at the Torpedo Factory Arts Center\, 105. N. Union Street\, Alexandria\, Virginia. Join us for Second Thursday on April 9th from 11am – 9pm!

SUMMARY:"Perceptions" Exhibit at TAG Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Perception is as nebulous as it is unique. The dictionary tells us it’s “the ability to see\, hear\, or become aware of something through the senses\, or a way of regarding\, understanding\, or interpreting something; a mental impression.” Perception also describes the role of the artist in observing and gathering material from the everyday life to create art. The tangible world provides the source material\, but it is the interpretation or perception of the artist that engages the viewer. \nIn its new exhibit\, The Associates Gallery at the Torpedo Factory will feature 3-D artist Erika Cleveland\, painters Ellen Delaney and Kara Hammond\, and street photographer Val Proudkii in the next show entitled Perceptions. \nPaintings\, photographs\, healing dolls will be featured along with a special installation entitled Remember these thingsthat literally extends beyond the gallery’s doors that creator Kara Hammond describes as a paean to the material culture of libraries. Erika Cleveland’s healing dolls represent “the dilemma that humans face in being spiritual beings in a physical form.” This dichotomy creates the transformative narrative inherent in being vulnerable and expressing emotion. Painter Ellen Delaney has been inspired by experimenting with color and texture in her abstract landscapes in acrylics that speak to seeing and capturing the emotion of a place rather than an accurate recreation. And fine art photographer Val Proudkii has cited his love of street photography with his admiration of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Brassai who captured decisive moments in ordinary lives and in ordinary places. \nPerceptions will be featured May 3-31st in TAG 11am to 6pm daily in TAG in Studio 319.

SUMMARY:Dimensions
DESCRIPTION:Dimensions are created by dragging something into a new direction. In mathematics we think of such concepts as time and space\, surfaces such as planes and angles when we talk about dimensions\, the pushing and pulling of line segments and points to create form and substance. \nIn its latest exhibit\, Dimensions\, The Associate Gallery or TAG asks viewers to consider these various abstract spaces independently of the physical space we all live in. From ceramics\, to fiber\, to paint and painting in wax\, this exhibit brings together many points on the artistic spectrum into one show of diversity. \nCeramics artist Brian Grow describes his artwork as an amalgam of his interests in experimentation\, process\, aesthetics and ancient cultures. Most recently his sculptural and functional works have leaned heavily on the art of wood firing\, a labor-intensive process that may be viewed as a direct extension of the sculpting of his work and a welcome marriage between spontaneous\, surface and form. \nJulia Dzikiewicz also finds inspiration in the ancient drawing from Byzantine Art and Christian Iconography to guide her work\, resulting in art with bold colors\, flat images and inclusions of crystals\, pearls or metals. Her usual themes are politically oriented and reflect an interest in history and the depiction of suffering in art.  Working exclusively in the medium of encaustic to paint\, to print\, and to construct three-dimensional objects\, she utilizes this process of molten wax based paint (composed of beeswax\, resin and pigment) to apply layers to an absorbent surface and then reheated in order to fuse the paint. \nFabrics have been Mary Holmgren’s passion since childhood. Returning to her roots she produces hand-woven tapestries in the Finnish ryijy technique. Ryijy derived from the Scandinavian word rya or “thick cloth” dates to as early as the 9th century with unique color and patterns for bedding coverlets and prayer rugs for cultural ceremonies. Today\, these modern tapestries are recognized as unique works of art. \nMixed media artist and painter\, Ann Noel rounds out the show with a unique presentation of portraits\, figurative\, abstract\, still life and landscapes with bold color choices and techniques. \nJoin the artists in Studio 319 for Dimensions from Monday\, June 1 through Sunday\, June 28. TAG is open daily from 11am – 6pm.

SUMMARY:Julia Dzikiewicz’s “Contradictions”
DESCRIPTION:Artist Julia Dzikiewicz likes contradictions. Working in the medium of encaustic she paints\, prints and constructs three-dimensional objects with bold colors embedding crystals\, pearls or even metals. \nShe notes\, “there is no contradiction quite so strong as family during the holiday. These paintings\, like the family holidays they depict\, are contradictions full of cartoonish characters\, bright colors\, and shiny crystals. For example\, a happy holiday includes an angry octopus. Sea monsters are sweet and sisters are sharks. I am there\, and yet as an identical twin\, is it really me? Welcome to my holiday. Please pass the turkey\, and don’t mind the shark in the chair next to yours.” \nJoin Julia on Sunday\, March 6th for a Meet the Artist Day. An opening reception will also be held on Thursday\, March 10th during Second Thursday at the Torpedo Factory from 6-8pm. \n——- \nThe Associates Gallery was formed in January 2015 following its endorsement by the Board of the Torpedo Factory Artists Association (TFAA). TAG also features the work of its 15 member artists\, including painters\, photographers and ceramic and fiber artists. TAG is located in Studio 311. Open 7 days a week 11:00 am – 6:00 pm (until 9:00 pm on Thursdays)

SUMMARY:Decathect: a verb
DESCRIPTION:First Show for Newly Juried Torpedo Factory Artist \nOne of the Torpedo Factory’s newest artists\, Richard Greenway\, exhibits his paintings at The Associates Gallery (TAG) in his first solo show. The show runs from July 19 through August 14 in studio 311. \nDecathect: a verb\nThe theme of the show is derived from a series of very personal studies illustrating the artist progression from when he first began painting with oils in 2010. Greenway’s juxtaposition of objects in paintings invokes vignettes of stories not yet finished. “Having a certain level of emotional detachment from my paintings has been liberating\,’’ says Greenway. \nMeet the artist from 4-6pm at a reception on Thursday\, July 21.

SUMMARY:Searching for the Divine in Contemporary Islamic Art
DESCRIPTION:Searching for the Divine in Contemporary Islamic Art\, an exhibition of paintings by newly juried Torpedo Factory Artists’ Association member Ahmed Ansari\, will be on display in TAG (Gallery 311) from May 26 – June 18. \nApprehension and misunderstandings abound when discussing Islam and Muslims. This exhibit extols the beauty and simplicity of some of the basic tenets of the Quran and names of God rendered in traditional Islamic calligraphy interpreted in abstract forms. The paintings are meant to break away from a single audience of fellow Muslims and reach across the divide to a shared appreciation of the Divine. The timing of this exhibit is fitting given that May 27\, 2017 marks the first day of Ramadan\, a month of fasting and spiritual pursuits amongst all Muslims worldwide. \nAnsari was born and raised in Mumbai\, India. While in college\, he worked with textile\, jewelry\, and commercial design\, including Arabic calligraphy. Ansari’s career as a graphic designer and art director led him to positions in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. In 1990\, he immigrated to the United States to work for an international advertising agency in Boulder\, Colorado. For more than 30 years\, Ansari’s commercial work focused on digital media and web design. In the last few years he has focused his attention on his life-long love of Arabic calligraphy and fine art painting. Ansari currently resides in Chantilly\, Virginia\, and was juried into the Torpedo Factory Artists’ Association in April 2017. \nSearching for the Divine in Contemporary Islamic Art will be in Gallery 311 from May 26 – June 19. There will be an opening reception on June 8 from 6:30 – 9:00 pm. \nTAG is Open Daily \nFriday – Tuesday 11:00 am – 6:00 pm \nWednesday 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm \nThursday 11:00 am – 9:00 pm

SUMMARY:Mercreatures & Jewels - Veronica Barker-Barzel and Paulette Warwick
DESCRIPTION:June 20 – July 9\nTAG is located in Gallery 311; Torpedo Factory Art Center\nOpening reception on June 20 from 6:30 – 9:00 pm. \nMercreatures & Jewels by Veronica Barker-Barzel and Paulette Warwick Opens in TAG; The Associates Gallery at the Torpedo Factory Art Center \nMercreatures & Jewels will open in TAG (The Associates Gallery) on June 20. An exhibition of prints and jewelry by Torpedo Factory Artists’ Association members Veronica Barker-Barzel and Paulette Warwick \, the show pairs the fantastical world of Mercreatures created by printmaker Barker-Barzel\, with the industrial couture jewelry formed with balance\, strength\, and movement by Warwick. The show will be on display in TAG from June 20 – July 9. \nPrintmaker\n Veronica Barker-Barzel often describes her work as Urban Surrealism and the theme of her show is nature based with fantasy type scenes such as trees becoming one with bird homes. Veronica celebrates the outdoors with images of boats and the depiction of magical Mercreatures. These Mercreatures are hybrids such as turning cows into sea fellows or merchickens\, because after\, must a mermaid only eat fish? \nBarker-Barzel discovered etching and found herself. Transferring her ideas or sketches right onto a plate: from etchings\, relief\, or collagraph\, she loves the feeling of pulling the first print and the anticipation of what the image will look like. In creating art\, it is not just the final product but the process that makes her. Barker-Barzel lives in Alexandria\, VA and is a member of Printmakers Inc. (Studio 325) at the Torpedo Factory Art Center. She was juried into the Torpedo Factory Artists’ Association in April 2017. \nJewelry\nJewelry artist Paulette Warwick designs and fabricates wearable pieces of art that are constructed primarily in sterling silver and semi-precious stone. Juried into the Torpedo Factory in April of 2010\, she originally worked with fiber\, constructing large\, intricately pieced wall hangings studded with beaded embroidery. In June of 2013 she met Anthony Camargo\, a jewelry designer and part of the design powerhouse of Anthony Nak. He saw her fiber work\, and asked her to assist him with some leather pieces he was constructing. Leather morphed into silver and gold and a line of luxury jewelry was born. The brand Anthony by Anthony Camargo was retired in 2015. \nWarwick continued to experiment with creating pieces using a framework of silver and steel rings with additions of the same small stones that had been used in the fiber embroideries. This current collection bears the same love of detail and passion for slow craft as in her previous medium and she is once again collaborating with Anthony on a new leather collection that he has recently designed. Warwick lives and works in Frederick\, MD and is represented by the Muse \, located in downtown Frederick. \nMercreatures & Jewels will be in Gallery 311 at the Torpedo Factory Art Center from June 10 – July 9. There will be an opening reception on June 22 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. A partial gallery show with pieces from all 14 members of TAG is also on display. TAG is located in Gallery 311; Torpedo Factory Art Center; 105 N Union St\, Alexandria\, VA\n22314.\nOpen Daily\nFriday – Tuesday 11:00 am – 6:00 pm\nWednesday 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm\nThursday 11:00 am – 9:00 pm

SUMMARY:Light & Depth: Featuring Marine Weiss and Jennifer Brewer Stone
DESCRIPTION:TAG is located in Gallery 311; Torpedo Factory Art Center\nOpening reception on July 13 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. \nLight & Depth: Featuring Marine Weiss and Jennifer Brewer Stone Opens in TAG;\nThe Associates Gallery at the Torpedo Factory Art Center \nThis exhibition by Torpedo Factory Artists’ Association members Jennifer Brewer Stone and Marine Weiss pairs the abstracted natural forms created by artist Brewer Stone\, with the windows of ‘stained glass fabric’ by artist Weiss. The show will be on display in TAG from July 11 to July 31. An opening reception will be held on July 13\, 6:30-8:30 p.m. This will be during the Second Thursday art event\, and multiple receptions will be happening in the building. A partial gallery show with pieces from all 14 members of TAG is also on display. \nJennifer Brewer Stone\nJennifer Brewer Stone is fascinated by the majesty of nature and her pieces evoke that sense of awe. In this show\, Brewer Stone explores abstracted natural forms and the merging of sea and outer space. \nBrewer Stone’s pieces combine honey-like resin\, sometimes in multiple layers\, acrylic paint\, and metallic pigment. The resin flows over the surface like water and cannot be controlled entirely–similar to nature. Colors bloom within the resin or create cells\, replicating natural\nelements. As an artist Brewer Stone works between control and the unexpected dictated by the materials. \nBrewer Stone was juried into the Torpedo Factory in March of 2012\, and works from Studio 227. She has been accepted into national and international juried shows for her work on her Dance of Life Series\, including ArtKudos\, Art Buzz\, and the Richeson 75 Wildlife competition. Her work has been collected across the United States and in Europe. \nMarine Weiss\nMarine Weiss strives to make sense of disorder in her artwork and this show represents the sweet nostalgia of the places in Weiss’s heart. Her pieces are little windows into her dreams and she is inspired by the many shades and hues of nature. Weiss mixes different media such as painting\, sewing\, quilting\, embroidery. Her pieces glow\, reminiscent of stained glass brilliantly illuminated by sunlight\, by adding a light box frame to an artistically woven cloth. \nWeiss was juried into the Torpedo Factory in March 2017. She is a 2003 graduate of the Sorbonne\, University of Paris in Arts Plastiques and Italian Literature. She owned and managed an organic grocery in the Montmartre neighborhood of Paris called Bio Neige for many years following graduation. She lives in Alexandria\, Virginia. Weiss is participating in the Torpedo Factory Visiting Artist Program and will be working in Studio 328 during the month of August.
