In July, we invite you to cool off from the heat and join our “Summer Social”! Featuring receptions in Target Gallery, Art League Gallery, and The Associate Gallery, as well as new projects and artists in the Post Grad Studio and the New Project Studio.

Enjoy a special after-hours event at the Torpedo Factory Art Center every month. Browse open studios and galleries, interact with artists, and enjoy special programming. Stop by on your way to dinner and make an evening of it!

  • 6pm: ASO Sympatico performs in our Main Hall, featuring music by Orff Ensemble and Singing Eagles.
  • 7 pm: Target Gallery (Studio 2) welcomes juror Adriel Luis, curator of digital and emerging media at the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center to talk about the new exhibition, Glitch.

Second Thursday Art Night

In May, we celebrate the theme “Everyone Has a Story”. This month’s line-up features a talk for Ephemera in the main hall outside of Target Gallery, a DIY project with the Artist Association on the 3rd floor, and a solo artist reception for Lesa Cook in The Art League. Stop by the Post Graduate Studio to meet with current MFA grad Samantha Sethi. Meet George Washington University’s Art Therapy 2017 graduating class and take part in a creative storytelling workshop. Explore the Fundred Dollar Bill Project as they bring their ongoing project to the New Project Studio. Meet your local Alexandria Library and hear about their Alexandra Reads project. Welcome Story District, the critically-acclaimed DC storytelling program, to Northern Virginia in anticipation of their first-ever Virginia event here at the Torpedo Factory on June 23.  Visit our friends in the Alexandria Archaeology Museum all night as they share stories about artifacts from Alexandria’s past. As always, EatsPlace has the beer and victuals.

    Take part in a hands-on project with Samantha Sethi, the Spring 2017 Post-Grad Resident, and hear about her upcoming projects throughout the DC area.
  • 7 pm: The Art League – Studio 21
    Reception for solo artist Lesa Cook: Gods, Heroes, and Fools
  • 7:30 pm: Target Gallery – North Hall (near Spiral Staircase)
    Artist panel for Ephemera, an exhibition in Target Gallery contemplating themes of nature, time, memory, and brevity. Several participating artists will discuss the process behind their works and answer questions.
  • 6-9pm: Torpedo Factory Artists Association – 3rd floor landing
    Join members of the Artist Association as they partner with WABA (Washington Area Bicyclist Association) to make sculptures out of bike parts.

  • “Everyone Has a Story: Creative Workshop”
    GWU (George Washington University) Art Therapy Students Association – Main Hall
    Over the past year, the graduating class of GWU’s Art Therapy program developed a series of art workshops and conversations focused on exploring identity and diversity. Join these talented students as they reach the culmination of their year with a special workshop at Torpedo Factory Art Center.
  • The Fundred Dollar Bill Project
    New Project Studio – Studio 8
    In celebration of the Corcoran Gallery’s extension of Mel Chin’s Fundred Dollar Bill Project, the New Project Studio welcomes this one-of-a-kind art project for the month of May. Experience the wonder of this unique art piece dedicated to raising awareness of lead poisoning among children. Create a Fundred Dollar Bill of your own. Come back on Thursday May 25 for a special reception and conversation in the Main Hall with artist/creator Mel Chin and the Fundred Dollar Bill Project team.
  • “Books and Beyond: Find Your Story”
    Alexandria Library – Second Floor Mezzanine
    The Alexandria Library is dedicated to building community by providing opportunities to learn, explore, create and connect throughout our neighborhoods. Stop by their table tonight to hear about their upcoming events, including All Alexandria Reads, in partnership with our Second Thursday event.
  • Story District at the Torpedo Factory
    South Hall
    Welcome Story District for a special pop-up project in preparation for their first-ever Virginia event on June 23 here at the Torpedo Factory. Called the “gold standard in storytelling” by The Washington Post and nominated for the 2012 and 2016 DC Mayor’s Arts Awards, Story District is widely known in the region for showcasing storytelling at its best.  Story District promotes excellence and cultivates new talent in storytelling in the Washington, DC, area through its live performances, coaching, classes, and ongoing support of storytellers. By showcasing diverse perspectives and life experiences, our stories entertain, enrich an understanding of the world, promote compassion, and highlight our shared humanity.
  • “Alexandria Speaks”
    Alexandria Archaeology Museum – Studio 327
    Artifacts can tell a story about what life was like in Alexandria long ago. Write your own histories of artifacts on display before returning to the present to watch oral history interviews of current Alexandria residents from the Immigrant Alexandria Project.

In April, we celebrate National Poetry Month with The Art of Poetry. This month’s line-up features receptions for Ephemera in Target Gallery, Newly Juried Artists in The Associates Gallery, and Open Exhibit in The Art League. Write a poem in the Alexandria Archaeology Museum (Studio 327) that’s inspired by the 18th-century ship found on the Alexandria waterfront. Welcome Samantha Sethi, the spring post-graduate resident, as she starts her three months in Studio 12. Write letters to the President with performance artist Sheryl Oring’s I Wish to Say project. The Northern Virginia chapter of the American Institute of Architects celebrates National Architecture Week with hands-on art projects. As always, EatsPlace has the beer and victuals.

  • All Evening
    • Local architects from AIA Northern Virginia invite visitors to explore their exhibition and take part in a series of DIY projects, including a matching game, a drawing project, and Scrap City.
    • Sheryl Oring’s I Wish to Say gives people a chance to write postcards to the President. Starting in 2004, this project has sent more than 3,200 postcards to the White House over the past 13 years. Oring sets up a portable public office – complete with a manual typewriter – and invites people to write postcards to the President.
    • Be it a haiku or an ode, write a poem in honor of the historic ship that crews discovered just a few blocks away. Learn about the ship and efforts to preserve it in the Alexandria Archaeology Museum.
    • The Associates Gallery (Studio 311) features the work of the Newly Juried Artists.
  • 7 pm: Target Gallery – Studio 2
    Ephemera reception with Juror’s Talk
    The newest exhibition in Target Gallery features the work of 22 national and international artists who contemplate themes of nature, time, memory, and brevity.
  • 7:30 pm: The Art League – Studio 21
    Open Exhibit reception with awards

In March, we imagine tomorrow with The Future is…. Find forward-facing exhibitions with March150 in Target Gallery and Heidi Nam’s Netted: Morphological State of our Urban Space in The Art League Gallery.

Draw your vision of the future of Alexandria and the Torpedo Factory with AIA Northern Virginia and Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center.

In the New Project Studio, create a Fundred Dollar Bill, a currency of imagination, and contribute to the national project that supports efforts to end childhood lead poisoning. Artwork will be collected and includes in the Corcoran’s Fundred Reserve exhibition of 453,168 (and counting) hand-drawn bills collected from across the country.

Join Post-Graduate Resident Jay Hendrick for a workshop “How to Build a Boat When No One Knows How to Build a Boat” and more to see and do on all three floors. Be sure to stop by EatsPlace, which now serves wine and beer.

In February, join us as we celebrate an evening of Love & Friendship. This month’s line-up features a reception in the Target Gallery for Ipseity and The Art League Gallery previews Patrons’ Show. In Studio 327, the Alexandria Archaeology Museum exhibits artifacts from the Friendship Firehouse and a presentation with a representative from the FFH Museum at 7 and 8. Jay Hendrick, the winter post-graduate resident, leads a workshop in Studio 12. DIY projects are led by The Mobile Art Lab in the New Project Studio and artists from the Torpedo Factory Artists’ Association. Food & drinks provided by EatsPlace Cafe & Marketplace.

Night arrives earlier and earlier, but inside the Torpedo Factory, we celebrate with Winter Lights. Join us in December for a festive Second Thursday.

Attend gallery receptions in Target Gallery and The Art League Gallery. Preview scenes from Jane Franklin Dance’s new performance, The Migration Project. Patrick Sargent leads a hands-on cardmaking station and Jihee Kang shows visitors how to make mini paper ornaments.

  • Site 3 (Hallway near the elevator on 3rd floor)
    6:30 pm:
    Reception for Women’s Work, featuring art by Naomi Christianson, Julie Dzikiewicz, Lizzy Lunday, and Fierce Sonia
  • Target Gallery (Studio 2)
    7 pm: Reception for the new exhibition, Material as Medium, which explores fibers and textiles as high art. Juror Aaron McIntosh talks about his selections for the show.
  • The Art League (Studio 21)
    7:30: Reception for December’s Open Exhibit, juried by Robert Yi, and Dennis Crayon: That Which Was Once Whole. Crayon starts with an image of an old photograph and imagines what the world looked like just out of frame. A skilled trompe-l’œil artist, it may seem that the photograph is taped to the canvas, but it is part of the painting.

Holiday Activities

  • Decorate dough and paper ornaments in the Alexandria Archaeology Museum (Studio 327) and learn about holidays in Alexandria’s history.
  • Pat Sargent in Printmakers, Inc. (Studio 325) leads people through the process of creating their own greeting cards.
  • Current Post-Graduate Resident Jihee Kang makes miniature paper ornaments in the Post-Graduate Studio (Studio 12).

Live Performances

  • 6pm: Preview a section of ASO Sympatico’s Holiday Cheer. The full performance will take place on Saturday, December 10.
  • 6:30 – 7pm; 8:20 – 8:45 pm: Live music throughout the evening with Cat Janice.
  • 8pm: Preview a section of Jane Franklin Dance’s The Migration Project. The full production will have a one-night showing the following evening, on Friday, December 9.

Second Thursday Art Night: Honoring Our Veterans

Enjoy an special after-hours event at the Torpedo Factory Art Center every month. Browse open studios and galleries, interact with artists, and enjoy special programming. Stop by on your way to dinner and make an evening of it!

Join us in November as we honor America’s veterans and those who have supported them over the generations.

Afterward, stop by the Potomac Riverfront to see El Galéon Andalucia, a replica of a 16th century Spanish Galleon that will be docked behind the Torpedo Factory for the weekend.

Honor Our Veterans

  • Drinks in the Main Hall are provided by Vermilion Restaurant & Bar and Neighborhood Restaurant Group, in support of Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food & Agriculture’s Veteran Farmer Program. All proceeds and donations at the bar will go to benefit the program’s mission of training and equipping military veterans to meet the growing needs of our nation’s agriculture field.
  • Main Hall: USO of Metropolitan Washington-Baltimore partners with the Torpedo Factory Art Center to feature a series of works in the main hall by USO’s vibrant community of veterans.
  • Studio 8: In the New Project Studio, see ceramic and bladesmithing work created by injured military personnel as part of The Art League’s IMPart Program.
  • Studio 12: Post-Graduate Resident Jihee Kang guides visitors to cut and color miniature fold-up Army hats.
  • Studio 327: The Alexandria Archaeology Museum will have on view the list of men and women from Alexandria who served or supported the military during The Great War. Then, visitors can create WWI-style dog tags or a red poppy.
  • 3rd Floor Landing: Create Navy-themed stitchings on recycled fabric with members of the Torpedo Factory Artists’ Association.
  • Preview Andy Yoder’s Highest Honor project. Read about how he converted military hospital gowns into paper for this three-story banner, which celebrates the Torpedo Factory’s wartime legacy.

  • Studio 2: Target Gallery hosts the exhibition for the 2016 Post-Graduate Residents and formally announces the names of the 2017 artists.
    • 7 pm: Artist talk and presentation
  • Studio 21: The Art League hosts openings for MiniMax,  The Artistic Frame, and Soomin Ham: Sound of Butterfly.
    • 7:30 pm: Gallery talk and awards
  • Studio 325: Printmakers Inc. hosts an opening for MerCreatures and Fairy Tales.
  • Sites 2 & 3: Students from Marsha Staiger’s abstract painting class are on view in Emerge.
    • 6:30 pm: Artist talk and presentation

Live Music

  • 6 pm; 8:15 pm: The Improbables perform an eclectic selection of original songs and covers including folk, country, bluegrass, and pop.
