Each begins at noon. \n\nJanuary 26: Portfolio & Outreach Tips for Artists\nFebruary 9: E-commerce for Artists & Makers\nFebruary 23: Exhibiting Art Online\nMarch 9: Pricing Artwork\n\nContent will be tailored to Alexandria\, Virginia\, and the broader D.C. metro area\, but admission is open to the general public. \n\n\nFor more information or reasonable disability accommodation\, contact arts@alexandriava.gov or 703.746.5565\, Virginia Relay 711. \nRegister Now\n\nSession Information\n\n\nTuesday\, January 26\nPortfolio & Outreach Tips for Artists\nBefore considering how to share your artwork with the masses via selling on your own website or through other shops/galleries\, there are a few essentials required to organize your art practice. \nThis workshop will help you get organized\, better communicate what your practice is\, and why it is important to support. \nIn this workshop you will understand how to tap into other avenues of income that do not require a website or ecommerce upkeep. You will also understand the organization required to make moving your practice into online spaces. This is the beginning step to expanding your sales funnel\, increasing your art brand visibility (exhibitions\, press\, collections) and your sales profit. \n\n\nTuesday\, February 9\nE-commerce for Artists & Makers\nWhether you’ve never made a website\, are thinking about changing the look of your online portfolio\, or expanding into e-commerce: this workshop is for you. \nWe will review the basic checklist of what’s needed for an artist website\, what collectors and art experts look for as well as how to use metadata appropriately to work for you. This workshop also covers pros and cons to encourage you to think critically about how much to display on your website and when based on what projects you may have coming up. \n\n\nTuesday\, February 23\nExhibiting Art Online\nDuring the pandemic\, artists are depending on online platforms more than ever before. This workshop will cover how you can expand your reach by participating in online exhibitions\, as well as how to curate your own. You’ll receive a checklist of what to consider for platform visibility and how much engagement is required for an online exhibition to actually be effective. This workshop will briefly cover how else to funnel online audiences to your website\, such as press and social media\, however this is not a social media how to workshop. \n\n\nTuesday\, March 9\nPricing Artwork\nNot sure how to price your artwork? That is one of the trickiest marks in the book. Some artists don’t hit the sales they’d like because they’re underpricing their work and not communicating their value properly\, while others may be overpricing (pricing themselves out of their market). \nThis workshop will cover what you need to consider to price your artwork\, when you should increase your prices\, how to communicate your value across your brand\, and how to actually identify your market (yes\, art is a market like every other business!). \n\n\n\nAbout Latela Curatorial\nLatela Curatorial is a full service art advisory firm and curatorial office based in Washington DC\, specializing in mid-emerging women artists. LC provides contract curatorial services for a variety of organizations. Founded in 2014. Passionate about supporting the arts ecosystem in the nation’s capital\, LC excels in working with art collectors as well as architects/developers in an ever-gentrifying area and underrepresented art market to augment the area’s artistic currents and talents. \nAbout Alexandria’s Office of the Arts\nThe Department of Recreation\, Parks and Cultural Activities promotes the value of arts and culture in Alexandria by nurturing\, investing in and celebrating the creative contributions of artists and arts organizations through the Office of the Arts division. SUMMARY:Sto Len: RENEWAL
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, Torpedo Factory Art Center is featuring the work of AlexRenew Artist-in-Residence sTo Len in an exhibit called RENEWAL\, in Studio 13. Commissioned through the City of Alexandria’s Public Art Program\, Len’s work aims to elevate the public’s personal connection to the wellbeing and sustainability of local water systems. \nTake an Interactive Virtual Tour\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nView this post on Instagram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nA post shared by Torpedo Factory Art Center (@torpedofactory) \n\n\n \nRENEWAL provides a behind-the-scenes perspective into the AlexRenew water recovery process. In Studio 13\, Len displays his active and growing crowdsourced archive. The exhibition will evolve with a water-themed radio show and a public engagement opportunity called SEEWATER. \nA physically distant photo scavenger hunt\, SEEWATER engages audiences and raises awareness for the smallest details of water\, from Alexandria’s sewer system to local waterfront habitats. The full photo scavenger hunt list is available here. It contains 40 items for people to photograph and email to Len at seewaterarchive@gmail.com tobe included in the exhibition. \nDownload the Photo Scavenger Hunt\nCapacity for Studio 13 is two people at a time within the space. Those who wish to visit the Art Center are asked to adhere to current Virginia Safer at Home guidelines\, including maintaining a social distance with people from different households\, wearing face coverings indoors\, and frequent handwashing for 20 seconds or use of hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. \n\nHear the Artist\n \nAbout the Residency\nOriginally from Alexandria\, now based in New York\, Len is Alexandria Renew Enterprises’ (AlexRenew) first artist-in-residence. Since the start of his residency in September 2019\, Len has spent time with various AlexRenew scientists and engineers and local conservationists and at local waterfront locations in Alexandria\, including Hooffs Run and Oronoco Bay. His artwork brings to light the water recovery process at AlexRenew and the public’s relationship to their local waterways. This program is the first phase of a collaboration with Alexandria’s Office of the Arts to bring a public-art perspective into AlexRenew’s commitment to fulfilling its vital mission to healthier waterways. \n“Renewal documents the ways in which I have witnessed and been inspired by the water recovery process\,” said Len. “From the behind the scenes access at AlexRenew to exploring the shorelines of the Potomac\, this body of work showcases the imprints that I have collected along the way.” \nUsing suminagashi marbling\, block printing\, gyotaku fish printing\, and cyanotype printmaking techniques\, he captures imprints and impressions from pollution\, bacteria\, and other waste found in wastewater and local waterways. The resulting natural patterns and abstracted forms spotlight the unseen and ignored environmental impact humans have on the Potomac River watershed. \nAbout the Artist\nSto Len is a printmaker\, sound\, and performance artist from New York by way of Virginia and Vietnam. Len works within this cultural dichotomy by incorporating issues of place\, identity\, history\, and the environment. Growing up in Alexandria\, Sto was influenced by the art and activism of the local punk scene in Washington DC\, which he continues to embody through artwork that combines those ethics with experimental takes on traditional craft. Adapting traditional printmaking techniques\, Len creates an updated visual language that engages in our relationship to water\, waste and its interconnectivity to a multitude of injustices. Sto has exhibited his work internationally including exhibitions in New York\, Vietnam\, Japan\, London\, France\, Germany\, Australia\, Denmark\, and Canada. He co-founded the alternative arts space Cinders Gallery in New York\, which has exhibited hundreds of artists since its inception in 2004. Learn more at stoishere.com and follow him on Instagram via @stoishere. \nAbout AlexRenew\nLed by a five-member citizen board\, Alexandria Renew Enterprises (AlexRenew) is a special-purpose wastewater authority serving over 300\,000 people in the City of Alexandria and parts of Fairfax County. AlexRenew treats an average of 35 million gallons of wastewater per day at its Water Resource Recovery Facility\, located in Alexandria\, Virginia’s southwest quadrant. SUMMARY:Melanie Kehoss: Through the Kitchen Door
DESCRIPTION:Through the Kitchen Door presents six household scenes from different eras\, spanning 1790 to today\, and tells a history of America’s home kitchens. Visitors are invited to peer through screen doors at silhouetted figures preparing meals\, to observe the changes over time\, and to imagine how the future kitchen may look and function. Visitors may also step into the kitchen of 1953 and become part of the artwork. \nTo design these scenes\, Kehoss used a combination of historical texts\, photographs\, illustrations\, and imagination. She then drew the silhouettes using a grid on black Tyvek (a paper-like plastic) and cut them out with knife and scissors. The cutouts were adhered to white Tyvek sheets and suspended on a wooden structure that Kehoss built for the space. \nThe New Project Studio is a space for artists to create interactive installations that engage the community. This installation was done in partnership with the Office of the Arts Events & Public Space Activations team and the Torpedo Factory Art Center. \nMelanie Kehoss\nRaised outside Milwaukee\, WI\, Melanie Kehoss is an artist and cultural worker living in Arlington\, VA. After graduating from Lawrence University in Appleton\, WI\, she began exploring papercutting as an alternative to digital media. She continued to experiment with cutting approaches as a graduate student at University of Wisconsin-Madison\, employing craft foam\, fleece\, and paint swatches. In 2008\, Melanie began displaying her papercuts as lightboxes\, which remain her signature. \nMelanie’s work has appeared in over ninety exhibits throughout the country\, and has been featured in solo shows at venues such as Fred Schnider Gallery of Art (Arlington\, VA)\, Blackrock Center for the Arts (Germantown\, MD)\, Hillyer Art Space (Washington DC)\, and Orange County Center for Contemporary Art (Santa Ana\, CA). \nMelanie has lectured at Georgetown University\, Carthage College\, and University of Wisconsin-Madison. She currently teaches art at Arlington Arts Center and US Arts Center-Chantilly. She manages the Arlington Visual Art Studio Tour and serves on the executive board of the Guild of American Papercutters (GAP). \nHeadshot by Marlon Crutchfield.
