SUMMARY:Kamille Jackson Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Link to Premiere: facebook.com/torpedofactory\nVideo goes live at 12pm \n  \nJoin us on Thursday\, September 29th at 12pm on Facebook for the online premiere of artist talk with 2022 Post-Grad Resident\, Kamille Jackson\, as her three-month post-grad residency comes to a close. Jackson talks with moderator Leslie Mounaime\, curator of exhibitions\, about her art practice and experiences during her time in the Post-Grad Studio #319. \nKamille Jackson is an interdisciplinary artist from Northern Virginia. In her work\, cosmic colors meet checkerboards from a long-gone suburban counterculture and symbols plucked from astrology and spirituality-based imagery. Floating and loosely abstract pictures form from the amalgamation of texts conjured by black conceptual artists\, desert transcendentalists\, and queer media. Through her work\, Kamille builds a queer\, black\, mystical iconography with drawing\, painting\, writing\, and embroidery. \nShe earned an MFA from George Washington University’s Corcoran School of the Arts and Design and a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. She recently shared a visiting artist lecture with the graduate students at Massachusetts College of Art and Design and received the Outstanding MFA Award as a participant in the Next Exhibition. She has exhibited work at The Garden\, Target Gallery\, Anderson Gallery\, Studio 23\, Bronx Art Space\, Gallery 5\, Richmond Library\, and the Refinery Space. Commissions include Justin Allen’s Black Boots’ Ekphrastic Punk EP\, Afropunk\, Elbowroom\, and Gallery 5. \nJackson has been working in studio #319 from July – September.

SUMMARY:2022 Post Grad Resident: Kiel Posner
DESCRIPTION:Kiel Posner (he/they)\nVirginia Commonwealth University\, 2020\nB.F.A.\, Craft and Materials Studies\n@aspects_unlimited\n\nArtist Bio \nPictured: Kiel Posner \nKiel is a Queer Jewish ceramicist currently living in Bethesda\, Maryland. Their work investigates the legacy of the button factory their great grandfather worked his way up to owning after immigrating to NYC\, from Eastern Europe\, in 1912. 109 years later\, after producing for Macy’s and Disney\, what’s left of the now defunct factory are some ceramic decals and a dusty kiln. Kiel received their BFA in Craft and Materials Studies in 2020 from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond\, VA. While in Richmond they were awarded a Fellowship from the Virginia Museum of Fine arts and rented space at Shockoe Bottom Clay. Since relocating to the DMV They have started teaching ceramics classes at Vis Arts\nRockville and The District Clay Center. \nArtist Statement \n“Glitch” is defined as a minor malfunction. A word now inseparable from popular vernacular is derived from the Yiddish Glitsh meaning “slippery place”. \nIn my most recent body of work\, I have been collaging the waterslide decals remnant from the factory on mass-produced second-hand ceramics creating glitchy surfaces that are intended to challenge the viewer’s sense of focus. \nI want to confront the viewer with optical illusions that play on their sense of trust. The same lack of trust I feel when double-taking at reports of demands for book burnings and new alternative “sides” of Holocaust being added to curriculum. I am stuck in a slippery place\, submerged in an untrustworthy information-hungry culture that pines for my attention while trying to erode my own history. \nIn attempts to translate this dishonesty and slippage in canon\, I have become very interested in techniques of Trompe l’oeil and Op art as avenues for making work that pushes back against the viewer’s gaze\, staring back and concealing information. I never realized the truth is such a Glitsh and I hope to bring to light the warps and mistakes usually camouflaged. \n\nAbout the Residency \nLocated in Torpedo Factory Art Center’s Studio 319\, this competitive juried residency provides meaningful support to emerging artists who have recently completed formal academic training in the visual arts. It is an opportunity to address the critical post-graduation juncture in an emerging artist’s career. \nResidents have three months of exclusive access to a studio in the Art Center. Therein\, they can create and sell work\, interact with the public\, and connect with other arts professionals. It’s an opportunity for professional development\, networking\, and a chance to define a practice outside of the academic context. \nApplications are open to recently graduated students who earned a bachelor’s or master’s art degree from an accredited university. Submissions were accepted from across the U.S.\, provided artists submit proof of their permanent residence in the area and/or commitment to contributing to the future of the region’s arts scene. \nLearn more about the 2022 cohort and previous years here.

SUMMARY:Through Our Eyes: Finding Home Again
DESCRIPTION:Each year 600\,000 military family members change duty stations\, leaving behind support networks\, community resources\, and homes. 80% of military children of active duty members attend public schools throughout the United States–entering communities with little\, if any\, understanding of their particular challenges. \nThrough Our Eyes: Finding Home Again is an exhibit by high school students from military families. Through photographs and captions\, they tell the stories of their transitions to the National Capital Region during the summer of 2022. \nThis exhibit features the work of Military Teens describing their experiences in images and words of relocating and “Finding Home Again” in this process. With work that answers such questions as “What Does Saying Goodbye” and “What Does Saying Hello” look like\, join us on the journey and also see stops along the way. A moving exhibit for anyone who has relocated often or who is seeking to find home again. \n  \nCOMMUNITY BUILDING ART WORKS \nC O – P R E S E N T E R \nCommunity Building Art Works (CBAW) connects veterans\, healthcare providers & civilians through workshops led by professional artists who reflect the diversity of the population we serve.  Our prestigious faculty include award-winning writers\, artists\, and musicians who have lectured and taught at institutions from Columbia University to Stanford\, and have toured and performed worldwide. Using our more than a decade of experience and proven process that has helped more than 60\,000 veterans and service members tell their particular stories\, we hope to ensure that the stories of military children are heard\, and that the diversity and breadth of experiences in the military are represented. For more information\, visit cbaw.org. \n  \nBLUE STAR FAMILIES \nC O – P R E S E N T E R \nBlue Star Families (BSF) is the nation’s largest grassroots military family support organization\, with a mission to support military families to improve military readiness. Its distinctive approach builds stronger communities around military families through knowledge and programs that address the unique needs of those who serve. Blue Star Families’ nationally recognized surveys and analysis give military families an important voice that informs policymakers and its military family programs. It uses the power of its collective resources and cross-sector collaborations to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of members of military families to strengthen the troops\, their families\, and our nation as a whole. SUMMARY:Introduction to Collagraph Workshop - All Levels
DESCRIPTION:Collagraph is an open plate making process\, where you build up the plate by gluing paper\, texture\, fabric and other materials onto a piece of matt board\, thin board\, plastic\, or other rigid substrate. Part of the plate can be inked like an etching by wiping the ink into the plate and the higher raised surface areas like a relief block using a brayer. It is an affordable plate making process and scales up very easily to create larger works than the traditional metal plate alternatives. In this workshop\, students will spend the first day making their collagraph plates and the 2nd day printing their plates on DGA’s etching presses. Wiping and inking techniques such as Viscosity will be demonstrated. \nStudents provide printmaking paper such as 1618\, BFK Reeves\, Arches Cover\, or Pescia (or may be purchased in the shop)\, and any materials wanted for gluing onto plates such as dried plants\, thin plastics\, fabric\, lace\, cut paper\, thread\, etc. Materials to be glued onto the substrate should not have any sharp edges. \nprice includes $30 lab fee \nInstructor:  Samantha Shelton

SUMMARY:The Cycle of Nature and Time
DESCRIPTION:On View in Studio 9\nArtist Talk (Updated Date): Saturday\, January 21\, 2pm \nEach year\, the Torpedo Factory Art Center commissions Art Center artists to propose installations during the winter season to activate the space through the busy holiday season. This year\, artist Saya Behnam\, of Torpedo Factory Art Center studio 229\, presents “The Cycle of Nature and Time\,” on view in Studio 9 from November 19\, 2022 – February 12\, 2023. This installation features a cascade of dried flowers and plants to represent the cycles of nature. Benham’s work invites viewers to contemplate the winter season as a time for regeneration and decay important to the natural cycle of life. \nArtist Statement \nIn this installation\, flowers and plants are my paint\, and space is my canvas. By drying fresh flowers and plants\, I try to show the beauty of life in death\, the rhythm\, harmony\, and the cycle of nature and time in fresh\, dried and decayed. The lack of attention to our environment and surrounding made me focus the viewers’ attention back on this cycle while celebrating its beauty. \nThe metaphors used in this installation are: the golden sphere for earth and universe\, the clock fixtures taken apart (pendulums and clock hands) for time\, Zodiac signs for months\, ashes\, soil\, clays for representing decay\, and dried flowers and plants to represent life and death. \nI used hundreds of plants and flowers in this installation\, mainly from Alexandria and Northern VA. \nFlowers and plants used in this installation include: \n\nVirginia White Crownbeard (Verbesina Virginia)\nSouthern Red Oak (Quercus falcata)\nWillow Oak (Quercus phellos)\nGoldenRod (Solidago Rugusa)\nMums (Chrysanthemums)\nBaby Breath flowers (Gypsophila paniculata)\nAmaranth (Gomphrena nitida)\nStraw Flowers (Xerochrysum bracteatum)\nRoses (Rosa ‘Mister Lincoln’\, Rosa chinensis\, Rosa ‘Papa Meilland)\nLavender (Lavandula)\nHardy Pampas Grass or Ravenna Grass (Tripedum Ravennae and synonym Saccharum Racennae)  \nBunny tail (Lagurus ovatus)\nCarnations (Dianthus caryophyllus)\nMarigold (Tagetes)\nSmooth Sumac and Winged Sumac (Rhus)\nDahlia (Dahlia pinnata)\nDusty Miller\, Silver Ragworh (Jacobaea maritima)\n\n  \nAbout the Artist\n \nSaya Behnam is an Iranian-American artist with more than 20 years of experience in painting\, sculpture\, and installation art. Her art practice is inspired by nature\, the juxtaposition of time and space\, birth and death\, and sacred or fractal geometry patterns observed in natural forms for the structures of growth\, energy\, decay\, chaos\, and order. By creating her handmade colors and inks from minerals\, fresh or dried flowers\, spices\, plants\, earth stones\, and other pigments —the medium intelligence\, an essential aspect of her creative process—they aren’t just mediums; those are parts of places and time. \n
