SUMMARY:Workshops on the Waterfront: Throwing Pottery with Julia O'Bryan
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a free workshop or live demo with a Torpedo Factory Art Center artist at the Waterfront entrance of the Art Center. There will be a different project every third Saturday of the month from April – September\, 1 – 3pm. \nJoin us for sunshine\, artmaking\, and fun! \n  \nThrowing Pottery with Julia O’Bryan\nJulia O’Bryan is the Spring Post-Grad Resident (Studio 319) and a graduate in Studio Art from Southwestern University in Georgetown Texas. She began throwing pottery when she was sixteen and it quickly became her passion. Her work stems from her childhood growing up in southwest Missouri as well as from her struggle with an aggressive auto-immune disease. \nJulia will demonstrate how to throw the base forms of mugs and bowls with porcelain. She will show different steps used in throwing different vessels on the pottery wheel from start to finish\, including centering the clay\, pulling walls\, and finishing. \n  \nArtist Statement: \n“The time we are given is an elusive commodity. The passage of time is the one thing we all have in common and yet\, not many of us stop to contemplate. We cannot change it. We all go through the same days\, hours\, and minutes\, and yet we all spend them differently. We define our own time by the memories we create and our experiences. You are the only person that can decide how to use the time you are given and whether it has been a time well spent. My work is inspired by my struggle with an autoimmune disease that has greatly altered my view on time and the way that I spend the time I have. Much like the coral I use as a metaphor to represent the destruction throughout my lungs\, as it is slowly being choked by the toxins around it as it continues to fight for survival in its environment\, I am trying to survive when the odds are stacked against me. I hope that my work gives the sense of a beautiful life well lived. I hope that my work gives joy\, hope\, and support to others in a similar position.”

SUMMARY:LE DRIP: The Uncontainable Sauce of Black Essence
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: April 23 – July 17\, 2022\nExhibition Reception: Friday\, May  13\, 2022 7 – 10pm  \n  \nView Online Catalog\nLE DRIP: The Uncontainable Sauce of Black Essence is a solo exhibition by Washington-based artist Blu Murphy\, Target Gallery’s 2022 solo exhibition recipient. The LE DRIP series is a group of mixed media portraits created as a tribute to the black community and celebrates the essence\, beauty\, and magic of this resilient and often undervalued group of people. \nThe subject matters included in this series are elementary and middle school students who attend a title one school in southeast D. C.\, where the artist also teaches arts education. Through collage\, the artist carefully and strategically combined the statement “I Am Art” with graffiti and images that represent black narratives. The portraits in this series offer the viewer an opportunity to challenge their perspectives and see a subset of individuals who are often unseen or overlooked as valuable masterpieces. \nThe white industrial walls of  Target Gallery are used as a backdrop to represent urban communities. Steeped in symbolism\, upon entering the gallery\, viewers will observe shoes hanging from a wire anchored in the ceiling. In urban communities\, this symbolizes remembrance; we are honoring and remember community members who are no longer with us. \nThe series includes more than ten (10) works of art encased in vibrant colored up-cycled frames. Dripping paint “le drip” travels from the portrait to the frame and then onto the gallery wall representing the uncontainable and undeniable sauce of the black essence. The ingredients of “the sauce” are rich and include: our combined pain\, triumphs\, joys\, strength\, and swag. \nThis exhibition was created to challenge the viewer to think about the following questions: \n\nWhat do you qualify as art?\nWhat do you view as valuable?\n\nThese questions are explored further in a simple\, black\, and white video created by the artist that features people from her community either boldly making the statement “I Am Art” or expressing why they consider themselves art. She hopes that each viewer will leave with a heightened sense of self-love and a different perspective on what they qualify as art. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBrandy “Blu” Murphy (she/her)\, is a Washington\, D. C. based artist is known for capturing the strength of her subjects through photography and utilizing graffiti\, texture\, and color to tell the story of disenfranchised African-Americans who are often unheard and unseen and showcasing them as works of art. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nAbout the Jurors\n \nMaps Glover is an artist and innovator\, from his installation and performances at some of the nation’s premiere stages including the Kennedy Center. Maps’ illustrations have also graced the covers of magazines like The Fray\, Hello Mr\, and Condé Nast Traveler. His approach to art is unique meditative his practice invites the viewer to reimagine the world around them. \n\nHeather Hakimzadeh is the Curator at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). Since her tenure at Virginia MOCA\, she has organized over 50 exhibitions ranging from local to internationally recognized artists. Hakimzadeh’s recent exhibitions include She Says: Women\, Words\, and Power\, Inka Essenhigh: A Fine Line\, and Wayne White: Monitorium. She wrote essays for both Inka Essenhigh’s monograph and the catalogue that accompanied the seminal group exhibition\, Turn the Page: The First Ten Years of Hi-Fructose. She earned a B.S. from Carnegie Mellon University\, a B.A. in Art History from Old Dominion University\, and an M.A. in Art History from the George Washington University. \n\n \nThomas James is a visual arts curator and arts facilitator based in Maryland. An appreciator and collector of fine arts\, he highlights working artists and facilitates spaces for creatives to refine and develop their craft. Beginning his career in the arts while in college at Frostburg State University\, his first exhibition was at Mountain City Center for the Arts\, where he was interning. Shortly after graduation\, Thomas took an opportunity to independently curate an exhibition on display at the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis\, and it was eventually travelled to George Washington University’s ArtReach Gallery in Washington\, DC. Shortly after\, Thomas went on to conduct a fellowship at The Maryland Federation of Art before joining the Baltimore anchor institution\, Creative Alliance\, in 2018 through 2021. He now leads the exhibition programming at Eubie Blake Cultural Center in Baltimore. Thomas has curated exhibitions on display at The Phillips Collection\, Anne Arundel Community College\, Gallery Al-Quds\, and Syra Arts. In addition to curating\, Thomas has served as a writer\, designer\, consultant\, lecturer\, and more for organizations and companies such as Vans\, Kaiser Permante\, B&O Railroad Museum\, Munger\, Tolles\, & Olsen LLP\, Urban Walls Brazil\, Reginald F. Lewis Museum\, and more. To learn more visit thomasjamesdc.com.

Her work stems from her childhood growing up in southwest Missouri as well as from her struggle with an aggressive auto-immune disease. Her work is an accumulation of her experiences; from her childhood\, from her struggle with an aggressive autoimmune disease\, all of the things that have made her who she is. Based on the destroying and scarring found throughout her lungs and body from her struggle with her autoimmune disease\, the coral is a reflection of the beauty that can be seen through decay. The wide range of color throughout the coral on her work is meant to reflect the passage of time through the “bleaching” effect it creates. SUMMARY:The Painted Form
DESCRIPTION:Clay\, perhaps more than any other medium\, offers a surface that is versatile\, challenging\, and remarkable in many ways. Using underglaze\, stains\, and glazing techniques ceramic artists ‘paint’ the surface of their forms — functional and sculptural — with abstract and realistic imagery. Painted surfaces might be decorative or a narrative bringing a story to the form. With the Kiln Club.

SUMMARY:Multiple Exposures Gallery Presents "Cold Warriors\," a Solo Exhibition of Photography by Tom Sliter
DESCRIPTION:Multiple Exposures Gallery is pleased to present a new exhibition of photography by MEG member artist Tom Sliter.  “Cold Warriors” is a portfolio of images that offers an artist’s view of the aircraft that defined the Cold War.  Rather than focusing on the aircraft’s characteristics\, the exhibit delves into the underlying design elements — the grand sweeps\, smooth lines\, sharp angles\, and graceful curves that are a hallmark of pushing boundaries.  Higher.  Faster.  Farther.

SUMMARY:2022 Applicant Presentations
DESCRIPTION:Hear from the 2022 applicants for studios at Torpedo Factory Art Center who have made it to Phase III. The 2022 application process is an annual competitive process to become a Resident Artist at the Art Center.  This year’s applicants are scored by four highlight qualified jurors. \nThe Phases\n\nPhase I considered artistic merit and was judged blind\, with jurors only viewing the art. Jurors looked for deliberately crafted artwork with an authentic and original point of view that reflects an awareness of current trends and aesthetics in the larger art world. It was worth a maximum 50 points. Applicants needed 33 points to advance.\nPhase II was non-blind and considers applicants’ backgrounds. Jurors looked for artists who can explain their art and who want to engage and interact with the public through their work. They reviewed applicants’ career highlights and how they have marketed themselves or their work. It was worth a maximum of 25 points. Applicants needed a combined 50 points from Phases I and II to advance.\nPhase III gives the jurors an opportunity to meet and interact with the applicants. This is the first time jurors are seeing the art work in-person to review it for quality. Jurors will consider the applicants’ ability to communicate about their artwork\, with an eye toward their desire to positively engage with the public. It is worth a maximum of 25 points. Presentations will be open to the public.\n\nThis year 50 applications moved forward to Phase III.  Presentations to jurors by applicants is open to the public. \nWednesday June 15\, 7 – 10 PM:  Presentations by 17 applicants.  Each applicant presents for five minutes with ability for jurors to ask questions.  Each applicant shares a presentation via slide show and each artist shares two in-person artworks. Audience is not able to ask questions or make comments. \nSaturday June 18 10:30 AM – 4:30 PM: Presentations by 33 applicants.  Each applicant presents for five minutes with ability for jurors to ask questions.  Each applicant shares a presentation via slide show and each artist shares two in-person artworks. SUMMARY:Workshops on the Waterfront: Fluid Art with Guido Zanni
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a free workshop or live demo with a Torpedo Factory Art Center artist at the Waterfront entrance of the Art Center. There will be a different project every third Saturday of the month from April – September\, 1 – 3pm. \nJune’s Workshop: Fluid Art with Guido Zanni (Studio 344)\n \nFluid Art (a.k.a.\, pouring acrylics) originated in the 1930s; it’s both a style and technique of painting. Acrylics are mixed with a thinning medium and poured onto a canvas. The flowing paint is then manipulated into the desired design.  Brushes are rarely used; paint is manipulated with forced air\, heat guns\, chains\, strings\, and other non-traditional methods. Fluid art is not a random process; outcome is guided by an understanding of the physics and chemistry of paints including paint density\, viscosity\, reflective properties\, pigmentation\, and texture. Several fluid art techniques will be demonstrated along with an explanation of each technique. \n\nGuido classifies himself as an abstract fluid artist. His training consists of college courses and numerous art workshops. To a large extent\, he is a self-taught artist\, developing his own techniques and style\, working mostly with acrylic paints. He has exhibited in numerous shows and galleries\, and maintains a studio at Torpedo Factory Art Center (Studio 344).

SUMMARY:Virtual Artist Talk: Julia O'Bryan
DESCRIPTION:Join us online!\nfacebook.com/torpedofactory \nJoin us on Friday\, June 24  at 12pm on Facebook for a live artist talk with 2022 Post-Grad Resident\, Julia O’Bryan\, as her three-month post-grad residency comes to a close. O’Bryan talks with moderator Leslie Mounaime\, curator of exhibitions\, about her experiences during her time in the Post-Grad Studio #319. \nHear her speak about how his residency inspired his work and process. With a BFA in Ceramics from Southwestern University in Georgetown\, TX\, hear about her recent explorations in different techniques and how her work has evolved over time. \nJulia will be working in Studio #319 for the rest of June. \n  \nAbout Julia: \nJulia O’Bryan is a graduate of Southwestern University in Georgetown\, TX. Gold accents throughout the work is meant to draw attention to the beauty in the human body over time and the beauty through brokenness that can occur throughout life. \n

The Art Center is part of the City of Alexandria’s Office of the Arts\, a division of the Department of Recreation\, Parks and Cultural Activities. Just south of Washington\, D.C.\, the Torpedo Factory Art Center overlooks the Potomac River in the Old-Town section of Alexandria\, Virginia. Each year\, more than a half million national and international visitors meet and interact with more than 165 resident artists in 82 studios and seven galleries. The Torpedo Factory Art Center is also home to The Art League headquarters and gallery\, and the Alexandria Archaeology Museum. For more information\, visit torpedofactory.org or follow the Torpedo Factory on Twitter\, Facebook\, Instagram\, and Pinterest via @torpedofactory \nAbout the Vibrancy Initiative\nThe Vibrancy Initiative is the implementation of the Action Plan which demonstrates the City’s long-term commitment to the arts and maintaining the building as an Art Center with the highest quality artists. It provides direction for Torpedo Factory Art Center to become a 21st century\, leading arts institution with a broad and deep connection to visitors\, artists\, and Alexandria residents\, built on equity and high performance with a curated building of artists at its heart. \n\n\n\n\nSpecial thanks to\nThe Factory Society\nThe Factory Society began as a young patrons committee of the Torpedo Factory and was launched as a separate and distinct nonprofit in 2017. Since then we have expanded our mission to include collectors of all ages. \nWe want to open collectors’ eyes to avenues of discovering affordable\, original and local art. We hope this will empower them to feel more confident while buying it\, and break down the barriers that prevent them from engaging with artists at galleries or shows. \nOur vision is a more down to earth art world! \n________________________________________ \nMusic all afternoon by DJ One Luv\n

Having spent over four decades exploring monumental and geological phenomena in a wide range of works from painting to photography to video\, in 2006 she decidedly began devoting herself exclusively to the exploration of environmental issues. Her artworks integrate experiences of on-location explorations\, interactions with scientists in their labs and research data all resolved into captivating climate-conscious works that encourage critical thinking about the role humans are having on the environment. Her most recent museum show\, SEEING CLIMATE CHANGE\, clearly demonstrates this.
