SUMMARY:Celebrate Pantone’s "Cloud Dancer” with Ethereal White
DESCRIPTION:Woodfired vase with light ash glazing echoes birch by Brian Grow of Alexandria\, Va. \nGeometric patterned stoneware lamp with incised detailing in contrasting black and white by Laura Fall of Arlington\, Va. \nFire On Studio 22 at the Torpedo Factory Art Center presents “Cloud Dancer\,” a winter exhibition celebrating Pantone’s boldly minimalist 2026 Color of the Year. In a delightful ironic twist\, the world’s color authority has declared that 2026 belongs to… white. Not ivory\, cream or eggshell but gloriously\, unapologetically white. \nArtists are having the last laugh\, as white has been a foundational canvas for millennia. \n“Cloud Dancer” showcases the subtle sophistication of white stoneware and porcelain\, atmospheric glazing techniques and ethereal effects that prove white is far from vanilla. \nSee silky porcelain at the height of elegance that seem to float with weightless grace yet boast unquestioned durability. Marvel at pitfired vessels where smoke and flame leave whispered traces\, creating celestial swirls reminiscent of cumulus formations at sunset. \nFind kilnformed glass in a pure icy white finish or marbled and juxtaposed with clear and cool hues. Diachomatic glass jewelry is studded with mesmerizing metallic flecks and iridescence. Find fantastical flowing hearts\, milky trays and creamy accents echoing a quiet magnificence. \nBrown stoneware Chinese brushpainted plate with ‘Emerald Soar’ ink and colored pigments on silk by Tracie Griffith Tso of Reston\, Va. \nSee white accents and detailing in oil compositions\, eco-prints and wall-hung 3-D creations. Floating feather and ginkgo leaf silhouettes shine from depths of indigo. Minimalist white in a contemporary silhouette harmonizes with detail and motifs in lamps and dishware that add an artistic spark to interiors. \nTracie Griffith Tso @traciegriffithtso takes center stage with her masterful white stoneware works\, where delicate Chinese brushwork dances across pale surfaces. Utilityware local-themed pottery and hand textured and patterned lamps by Laura Fall @laurafallceramicss shimmer with personality. Scott Kaye @scottkayepottery speaks to minimalism in miniature pots and classic functional dishware. Brian Grow @b.d.grow explores atmospheric woodfiring effects\, where ash kisses white clay in spontaneous\, natural gestures. Elke Seefeldt @rayelke offers smoky piltfiring and playful porcelain with an organic sensibility. Sandi Martina @sandimartina_glass manipulates glass with vision\, both frosted and clear echoing the soft\, diffused light of overcast days. \nCome for the cheeky celebration of “color” that isn’t color. Stay for stunning proof that white contains multitudes—from the crisp bite of fresh snow to the soft embrace of fog\, from the sharp clarity of winter sun on porcelain to the mysterious depth of moon-glow effects. \nAlabaster woodfired mugs by Brian Grow of Alexandria\, Va. \nEcoprint of a white feather by Elke Seefeldt of Arlington\, Va. \nWhether you seek functional vessels for daily rituals or statement pieces that elevate any interior\, “Cloud Dancer” offers white in all its nuanced glory. Our ceramic dishware is handcrafted\, microwave- and dishwasher-safe and guaranteed to make Pantone’s minimalist declaration look positively inspired is a plus for the season. \n3-D gallery Fire On Studio 22 offers various treatments of glass\, pottery and more on the first floor of the Torpedo Factory Art Center 11  a.m. to 6 p.m. daily and will be open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday December 12  for the Torpedo Factory Art Center’s  Late Night event. Also\,visit for February’s Late Night event on Friday February 6 open until 10 p.m. The gallery’s “Cloud Dancer” show runs January 1 through February 28\, 2025. \nFollow @studio.fireon for gallery updates and artist features. \nShino-glazed organic form by Elke Seefeldt of Arlington\, Va. \nA pair of minimalist\, contrasting ceramic hand-dipped tumblers by Scott Kaye of Arlington\, Va. \nHeart bowl\, thrown and altered in alabaster by Laura Fall of Arlington\, Va. \nYear of the Horse painting celebrates Chinese year in original brushwork by Tracie Griffith Tso of Reston\, Va.

SUMMARY:Nikki Giovanni: Immersive Experience
DESCRIPTION:The Nikki Giovanni Immersive Experience combines her poetry (as recorded by Giovanni at different times in her life) with audio soundscapes and motion graphic projections. \nThis is a Virginia Tech interdisciplinary collaboration between a composer\, designers\, literary experts\, embodied performance artists\, and creative technologists\, converging to create a multi-sensory experience. Each projection is crafted to capture the essence of Giovanni’s poetry\, drawing inspiration from its themes\, imagery\, and rhythmic cadence. \nAdditionally\, we utilized Virginia Tech’s University Libraries’ motion capture studios\, in collaboration with faculty and students from the School of Performing Arts\, to develop visual avatars featured in select final motion graphic works. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with the art on a deeper level\, allowing themselves to be enveloped by the interplay of sight and sound\, word\, and image. \nPresented by the City of Alexandria’s Office of the Arts and Virginia Tech’s Institute for Creativity\, Arts\, and Technology.

SUMMARY:Celebrating Diversity
DESCRIPTION:Diversity is at the heart of ceramic art — from the clays we shape to the methods we master. This exhibition showcases the full spectrum of ceramic expression: wheel-thrown\, hand-built\, and slip-cast forms; intricate sgraffito and underglaze painting; and the drama of raku\, oxidation\, and reduction firings. The Kiln Club presents both functional and sculptural works that highlight the individuality of each artist’s approach. “Celebrating Diversity” honors not only variety in technique and material but also the shared spirit of curiosity and creativity that unites the clay community. With the Kiln Club.

SUMMARY:Sensing Place: 2025/26 Post-Graduate Artists in Residence Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Third Floor Site 3 | Opening Reception April 10 @ 7-10 p.m. \nSensing Place brings together four former Torpedo Factory Art Center artists-in-residence whose practices consider place not as a fixed location\, but as something remembered\, recorded\, felt\, and activated. Between the physical action of investigating a place and the re-creation of someplace treasured elsewhere\, these artists create work that speaks to how the treasured places we visit in our lives and memories can traverse distances both physically and metaphorically. Overall\, these artists push for a noticing of our surroundings\, at times formal\, at times spiritual\, allowing viewers to notice the air between sculpted forms\, and view place as a site of history\, emotion\, and potential reimagination. Material exploration and community-oriented gestures further support these artists’ practices as they respond to places of personal importance – sometimes even responding to Torpedo Factory Art Center itself.   \nSookkyung Park engages the quiet physicality of paper\, air\, and gravity\, using repetition and materiality to reveal how light forms can define and hold space. Comprised of smaller forms building together\, the works show evidence of hands\, slowly folding and connecting pieces of paper. Upon viewing the work\, the artist can sense potential movement\, say if a breeze were to blow\, and possibly feel the artist’s presence in the space as well.   \nJill McCarthy Stauffer reconstructs environments through a variety of materials including light and projection. Using technology to imperfectly reflect aweing moments of perception\, Stauffer weaves together natural memory\, religious symbolism\, and personal ties to landscape. Their works become tech-mediated reconstructions of experience\, asking how human forms of representation shape our sense of place.   \nMicah Meyers approaches their practice through acts of cleaning\, mapping\, and close observation\, treating care and maintenance as artistic gestures that reveal how we move through and subconsciously come to understand our surroundings. As they work\, they document and contribute to the embedded signs of past human presence in a space. They often using everyday household or construction materials in their work.  \nAdele 이슬 Kenworthy’s practice centers community and her heritage beyond a fixed place\, often presenting personal and cultural rituals as an opportunity to be human together while ensuring these rituals live on beyond a single occurrence\, through collective memory. Her practice relies on both research and personal experience\, and she utilizes embodied gestures of care as means of preserving non-dominant histories.  \nMoving between the tangible and the ephemeral\, the exhibition suggests that place is not static or singular\, but experienced and built together through material attention\, daily habits\, technological mediation\, and community. Their work reflects that it is not only where we are\, but how we discern meaning from the places we pass through and what we carry forward with us. While personal methods of sensing and processing are predominant in each artist’s work\, it’s a treasure to see the thematic overlaps as well\, further connecting their joint experience of passing along a shared space to each other over the last year of their residencies.

SUMMARY:Bloom and Vessel
DESCRIPTION:In May\, the gallery bursts into bloom. “Bloom and Vessel” celebrates the relationship between ceramics and the natural world — vases\, planters\, and sculptural forms inspired by botanical life. Artists interpret the language of growth and renewal through form and surface: blossoms captured in porcelain\, leaf patterns etched in slip\, and glazes that flow like spring rain. These vessels honor both nature’s fragility and its persistence\, echoing the cycles of life that surround us. Whether functional or purely sculptural\, each piece serves as a container for beauty — a reminder that art\, like a garden\, grows from care and imagination. With the Ceramics Guild.
