DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: ToySphere: Reuse\, Replicate\, Reimagine\n\n\nWhat if your forgotten and unused toys could live again in virtual reality? Could that help you let go of them and pass them on to another friend? \nMany families keep unused toys hidden in closets\, drawers\, and boxes for years. This phenomenon\, known as product hibernation\, reduces opportunities for reuse and sharing—both of which are vital for a circular economy. Toys often carry deep emotional meaning\, uncertainty about where to share\, concerns about cleanliness or safety\, or not knowing who will appreciate the toy’s story. If we wish to keep value alive\, we need gentler pathways. Sharing must be easy\, trusted\, and meaningful. \nToySphere is our interactive platform that addresses this challenge. We 3D-scanned 33 disused toys and transformed them into virtual replicas—each with its own story and character. By reconnecting with these digital versions\, we explore how virtual preservation can sustain emotional attachment while encouraging families to make timely decisions about sharing before toys lose their relevance or value. \nPresented by the City of Alexandria’s Office of the Arts and Virginia Tech’s Institute for Creativity\, Arts\, and Technology.

DESCRIPTION:What can the body hold that the archive cannot? \nJoin post-grad resident artist Adele Yiseol Kenworthy for a free workshop that explores how memory can be held\, mended\, and shared in material form. Participants will transform the joy-filled\, sugary treat Dragon’s Beard into a way to think about how we hold the lives of others. \nTime: 10 a.m.-12 p.m. \nLocation: Torpedo Factory Art Center Studio 9 \nRSVP required. \nAdele (she/they) is a 1.5 generation Korean American artist-organizer whose work centers the AANHPI femme experience transforming ephemeral\, organic materials like cut florals and fruits into living monuments and counter memories existing in public. She explores what gestures and rituals we hold as sites of comfort during occupation and war. \nKenworthy holds her MFA in Social Practice Art with an emphasis in public policy from the Corcoran School of Arts and Design at George Washington University\, receiving the 2022 Outstanding MFA Award. She lives and works on the ancestral lands of the Piscataway and Nacotchtank (Anacostan) people\, in the Washington\, D.C metro area.

SUMMARY:Nikki Giovanni: Immersive Experience
DESCRIPTION:The Nikki Giovanni Immersive Experience combines her poetry (as recorded by Giovanni at different times in her life) with audio soundscapes and motion graphic projections.  \nThis is a Virginia Tech interdisciplinary collaboration between a composer\, designers\, literary experts\, embodied performance artists\, and creative technologists\, converging to create a multi-sensory experience. Each projection is crafted to capture the essence of Giovanni’s poetry\, drawing inspiration from its themes\, imagery\, and rhythmic cadence.  \nAdditionally\, we utilized Virginia Tech’s University Libraries’ motion capture studios\, in collaboration with faculty and students from the School of Performing Arts\, to develop visual avatars featured in select final motion graphic works. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with the art on a deeper level\, allowing themselves to be enveloped by the interplay of sight and sound\, word\, and image. \nPresented by the City of Alexandria’s Office of the Arts and Virginia Tech’s Institute for Creativity\, Arts\, and Technology.

DESCRIPTION:Free\, Space is limited\, so don’t forget to RSVP \nRSVP Here\nIn Creating Parametric Lamps\, artist and designer Braden Perryman will show participants how he pairs principles of geometry and logic with visual programming language Rhino+Grasshopper to design unique\, organic lamps that draw inspiration from nature. After the principles of parametric design and digital fabrication are explained\, participants are invited to participate in the creative process by assembling prefabricated laser cut components to create their own lamps. SUMMARY:Sensing Place: 2025/26 Post-Graduate Artists in Residence Exhibition 
DESCRIPTION:Third Floor Site 3 | Opening Reception April 10 @ 7-10 p.m. \nSensing Place brings together four former Torpedo Factory Art Center artists-in-residence whose practices consider place not as a fixed location\, but as something remembered\, recorded\, felt\, and activated. Between the physical action of investigating a place and the re-creation of someplace treasured elsewhere\, these artists create work that speaks to how the treasured places we visit in our lives and memories can traverse distances both physically and metaphorically. Overall\, these artists push for a noticing of our surroundings\, at times formal\, at times spiritual\, allowing viewers to notice the air between sculpted forms\, and view place as a site of history\, emotion\, and potential reimagination. Material exploration and community-oriented gestures further support these artists’ practices as they respond to places of personal importance – sometimes even responding to Torpedo Factory Art Center itself.   \nSookkyung Park engages the quiet physicality of paper\, air\, and gravity\, using repetition and materiality to reveal how light forms can define and hold space. Comprised of smaller forms building together\, the works show evidence of hands\, slowly folding and connecting pieces of paper. Upon viewing the work\, the artist can sense potential movement\, say if a breeze were to blow\, and possibly feel the artist’s presence in the space as well.   \nJill McCarthy Stauffer reconstructs environments through a variety of materials including light and projection. Using technology to imperfectly reflect aweing moments of perception\, Stauffer weaves together natural memory\, religious symbolism\, and personal ties to landscape. Their works become tech-mediated reconstructions of experience\, asking how human forms of representation shape our sense of place.   \nMicah Meyers approaches their practice through acts of cleaning\, mapping\, and close observation\, treating care and maintenance as artistic gestures that reveal how we move through and subconsciously come to understand our surroundings. As they work\, they document and contribute to the embedded signs of past human presence in a space. They often using everyday household or construction materials in their work.  \nAdele 이슬 Kenworthy’s practice centers community and her heritage beyond a fixed place\, often presenting personal and cultural rituals as an opportunity to be human together while ensuring these rituals live on beyond a single occurrence\, through collective memory. Her practice relies on both research and personal experience\, and she utilizes embodied gestures of care as means of preserving non-dominant histories.  \nMoving between the tangible and the ephemeral\, the exhibition suggests that place is not static or singular\, but experienced and built together through material attention\, daily habits\, technological mediation\, and community. Their work reflects that it is not only where we are\, but how we discern meaning from the places we pass through and what we carry forward with us. While personal methods of sensing and processing are predominant in each artist’s work\, it’s a treasure to see the thematic overlaps as well\, further connecting their joint experience of passing along a shared space to each other over the last year of their residencies.
