SUMMARY:Alexander D'Agostino: "A Shrine to the Forgotten"
DESCRIPTION:Reception and Artist Talk: Friday\, May 12 7-10PM\nPerformance: Friday\, June 9 at 8PM \nTorpedo Factory Art Center presents the Target Gallery solo exhibition recipient\, Alexander D’Agostino with “A Shrine to the Forgotten“. Alexander’s visual and performance works often become requiems for those Witch-hunted and accused for disrupting the “moral fabric” of society\, who’s stories are often packed away in some forgotten storage facility of collective memory. In this  exhibition Alexander invites the viewer to imagine the discovery of missing pages of a sixteenth century book of spells\, along with other documents and objects found in the Torpedo Factory when it was vacant after being used as a storage facility for the FBI and Smithsonian Institute. This site specific installation in the Target Gallery consists of large textile prints\, artist books\, and sculptural works that explore hidden and erased stories\, witch-hunts\, book-bans\, and “don’t say gay” bills that will tie the Torpedo Factories’ unique history with Alexander’s practice of engaging spaces with queer history\, myth-making\, and ritual. \nAlexander will also be having a virtual talk about artistic research with the Folger Shakespeare Library with Folger fellow Mindy Stricke on Tuesday\, June 6 at 6PM. Register for the talk HERE. \nView Online Catalog\n  \nAbout the Jury Panel \nHoesy Corona is an uncategorized queer Latinx artist of Mexican descent living and working in the United States. He creates work across a variety of media spanning installation\, performance\, and video. He develops otherworldly narratives centering marginalized individuals in society by exploring a process-based practice that investigates what it means to be a queer Latinx immigrant in a place where there are few. He choreographs large scale performances and installations that oftentimes silently confront and delight viewers with some of the most pressing issues of our time. Reoccurring themes of queerness\, race/class/gender\, nature\, isolation\, celebration\, and the climate crisis are present throughout his work. Hoesy has exhibited widely in galleries\, museums\, and public spaces in the United States and abroad. \n  \nHe lived in Mexico\, Utah\, and Wisconsin\, before moving to Baltimore\, MD in 2005 to establish a professional practice in the arts. He is a recent GKFF Artist Fellow 2019 & 2020 in Tulsa\, OK. And is a former Halcyon Arts Lab Fellow 2017-2018 in Washington\, DC. He is a current Nicholson Project Artist in Residence in SouthEast DC and is a resident artist at The Creative Alliance in Baltimore\, MD where he lives and works. \n  \nLaila Abdul-Hadi Jadallah  is a seasoned arts administrator\, writer and exhibition producer\, and curator with more than 15 years of experience. As a researcher\, Jadallah is interested in cultural diplomacy; the alternative histories and contributions of diaspora communities from the Middle East and North Africa to the art historical canon; and the new visual languages introduced by contemporary MENA artists’. Her most recent projects include curating More Than Your Eyes Can See: Contemporary Photography from the Arab World an exhibition organized in partnership with Tribe Magazine at the Middle East Institute. \nShe has presented about her work\, the role of arts in education\, and as a tool for social change and cultural diplomacy at programs organized by Montgomery College\, The Middle East Institute\, ArtTable\, Inc.\, Hillyer Art Space\, and the College Arts Association Annual Meeting. She recently served on the Executive Committee of the Washington\, D.C.-region chapter of ArtTable\, Inc. and co-chaired State of Art5/DC: A Conversation at the Smithsonian American Art Museum (2019). Jadallah is a member of ArtTable Inc.\, Arts Administrators of Color\, the Brokering Intercultural Exchange Group\, and Museum HUE.  She was in the inaugural cohort at Georgetown’s Laboratory for Global Performance and Politics’ Student Fellows program (2020/2021) and a 2017 and 2019 D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities Artist Fellow. \n  \nClaudia Watts  has been a lover and patron of the arts since childhood. In 2016\, Claudia assumed the role of strategic planning and partnerships at the Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum (ACM). In this role\, she co-authored the museum’s case for revitalization with the former director Lori D. Yarrish. Claudia also worked with community organizations\, educational institutions\, and artists to create programs that supported museum initiatives. She collaborated with ESPN’s The Undefeated to produce an All-Star 2018 pop-up exhibition and developed a community documentation program for teens that received funding from Coca-Cola. She also commissioned artist\, Adrienne Gaither\, to create a mural inspired by ACM’s collection for the newly renovated community lounge. In December of 2020 Claudia accepted a new position as the Director of Culture at Eaton Hotel. \nIn addition to her work in the arts\, she served as the Managing Editor of the Washington Informer’s Bridge Magazine\, an arts and culture-focused publication\, from 2018 – 2020. SUMMARY:Animalia
DESCRIPTION:From the first examples of artistic expression—cave paintings\, masks\, headdresses\, drinking vessels\, sacred objects—representations of animals have been central. Our ancestors had a closer relationship with their fellow creatures\, but even today\, artists find an undeniable connection to the animal kingdom they co-inhabit. July’s exhibit showcases work of the wild world\, the domesticated world\, the fellow inhabitants that inspire awe\, haunt our imaginations\, and celebrate the myriad life forms on our small planet. Featuring the Kiln Club.

SUMMARY:Alternative Firings II
DESCRIPTION:Scope artists take various forms of the ceramic medium—some chemistry of ground-up rocks\, minerals\, and water—to create works that have widely different properties and finishes. Consider tossing rock salt into a red-hot kiln; horsehair on vessels just lifted from the kiln; placing an object straight from the glowing kiln into a bed of straw\, sawdust\, or even seaweed. This August\, our artists demonstrate the results of firings with salt\, soda\, raku kilns\, smoke firing\, and other ingenuous techniques. Featuring the Ceramic Guild.

SUMMARY:SOUND HORIZONS
DESCRIPTION:EXPLORING THE SONIC FRONTIERS OF DATA-DRIVEN ARTISTRY\nSpanish\, Arabic\, Amharic  \nPresented by the City of Alexandria’s Office of the Arts and Virginia Tech’s Institute for Creativity\, Arts\, and Technology (ICAT). \nStep into the captivating world of sound and experience the cutting-edge Sound Horizons exhibition. Nestled within this immersive display is a tesseract housing four distinct sound pieces that will ignite your senses and transport you to new realms of auditory enjoyment. \nEach sound piece represents a different facet of the human experience\, drawing inspiration from cybersecurity data\, the time between morning and night\, things one wishes they told their younger selves\, and the mysteries of the neural mechanisms at play in individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease when they listen to or engage in music making. \nAs you enter the tesseract\, let the sounds wash over you and immerse yourself in the artistic expression of these audio landscapes. This immersive exhibition challenges conventional perceptions of art and showcases the boundless possibilities that sound can offer. \nThe exhibition includes four video\, sound\, and time based artworks by professional staff\, students\, and colleagues at Virginia Tech University selected for Alexandria and the surrounding region. \n“Musical Connection”\, Joanna Culligan\, Trish Winter\, Brandon Hale\, Tanner Upthegrove\, 2 minutes\, Audio and Video\, 2022\, \n\nDEAR YOUNGER ME\n5 minutes\, Audio and Video\, 2023\nDear Younger Me is a transformative project dedicated to creating healing spaces and opportunities for Black women to engage in self-compassion\, community building\, and personal growth. Our mission is to address the inner child while providing models of empowerment for Black women and girls. This installation incorporates the reading of letters written by the women to their younger selves while they are accompanied by a composition created from individual pulse oximetry and electrodermal activity (EDA) data recorded during the readings. Visitors are transported to a world that affirms and celebrates Black womanhood and reminds them of their inner resilience. \nKeisha V. Thompson\, Jada Hoffman\, Gilette B.\, Adele\,Ben Knapp\, Dacia Kings\, Tianyu Ge\, Eric Lyon\, Geefa Adane\, Sydney Johnson\, Meaghan Dee\, Andraé L.\, Brown & Tilandra Rhyne \n  \nLIMINAL SPACES\n14 minutes\, Audio\, 2022\nLiminal Spaces is a 14-minute fixed-media and ethereal sound composition that transcends the boundaries of time and space\, delving into the perplexing moments that exist between near and far\, calm and storm\, morning and night\, and the interplay of what was and what will come next. Through an intricate fusion of ambient soundscapes\, evocative melodies\, and captivating rhythms\, this audio composition takes you on a mesmerizing journey through the realms of transition and transformation to experience music in an unprecedented way only the Tesseract can allow for. \nBen Knapp\, Eric Lyon\, Natasha Staley\,Tanner Upthegrove\, Brandon Hale\, Gustavo Araoz \n  \nSONIFICATION OF CYBERSECURITY DATA\n6 minutes\, Audio\, 2021\, 2022\nSonification of Cybersecurity Data is a mesmerizing audio piece that transforms complex cybersecurity data into a digital symphony of sound directly connected to anomaly detection\, “attack and defend” scenarios\, and the dynamics of viral distribution\, all fields in cybersecurity research. Composers Brandon Hale and Tanner Upthegrove reimagine and depict Distributed Denial of Service attacks (DDoS) through the innate human ability to detect auditory patterns\, both temporally and spatially. With this musical arrangement\, you are at the center of a cybersecurity attack where each sound is either a piece of data or an attack. \nBrandon Hale\, Tanner Upthegrove \n  \nMUSICAL CONNECTION\n2 minutes\, Audio and Video\, 2022\nThrough an artistic blend of neuroscience\, music therapy\, and cutting-edge sonification technology\, Musical Connection installation sheds light on the uncharted neural territories that music traverses when people engage in music-making. You hear audio generated from electroencephalography (EEG) data in a sonification process. This audio is spatialized around the listener to display the data from sensors worn by a Music Therapist\, overlayed with audio from a trial music therapy session with research assistants from Virginia Tech. Applying the same process\, researchers seek to uncover how music-making impacts behavioral and interpersonal neural synchrony between persons living with Alzheimer’s Disease and their caregivers. \nJoanna Culligan\, Trish Winter\, Brandon Hale\, Tanner Upthegrove \n  \n  \n  \n \nPowered by advanced technology and networks of creative people\, the Institute for Creativity\, Arts\, and Technology (ICAT) brings together and supports teams of faculty and students from across academic disciplines to address grand challenges and creative opportunities\, ranging from large societal problems to industry-specific issues to the frontiers of artistic expression. \n  \n \nThe Office of The Arts promotes the value of arts and culture in Alexandria by nurturing\, investing in and celebrating the creative contributions of artists and arts organizations. Through engaging the community\, encouraging participation\, and facilitating access to the arts\, the Office of the Arts works with local artists and arts organizations to build a vibrant community for all of the City’s residents\, workers and visitors. \n  \n  \nThank you: \nAlexandria.hilton.com \n
