DESCRIPTION:Join artist Clare Suess in hand building a (clay) mouse trap or other comedic container for a beloved small object.\nThis event is free but space is limited please rsvp to reserve your spot! \nRSVP Here\n\n\n\nJoin us for a comedic handing-building ceramics workshop creating a home for your computer mouse or other small household item. Please feel welcome to bring a mouse if you have one or another object that wouldn’t traditionally be kept in a box or a jar. Clare Suess will then lead participants in learning hand-building ceramic techniques to construct a lidded vessel out of clay\, perfectly fitting your object. The workshop will end with painting and decorating your new vessel. \nThis seminar is designed through creativity between the Institute for Creative\, Arts\, and Technology at Virginia Tech\, Expressions at Amazon Arlington\, and the City of Alexandria’s Office of the Arts.

Featuring the vibrant percussion and expressive vocals of Ayanna Gallant alongside the raw and hypnotic grooves of guitar and vocals of Sol Roots\, the duo creates an intimate yet powerful soundscape that uplifts and inspires connection across cultures and communities.  \n  \nMaking Marbled Postcards | Grand Hall | 7-9 pm   \nJoin printmaker Samantha Shelton in a drop-in workshop on paper marbling\, a technique used for creating beautiful and complex patterns on paper and make a postcard for yourself to take home!  \n  \nMobile Art Lab | Grand Hall | 7-10 pm  \nStop by the Mobile Art Lab for some fun crafting!  \n  \nWeaving Demonstration | Studio 6 | 7-9 pm  \nJoin artist Heasoon Rhee in her studio as she demonstrates weaving techniques and shares her artistic process with visitors.  \n  \nWheel Throwing Demo | Studio 16 | 7-9 pm  \nJoin artist Lisa Schumaier out front of Studio 16 as she demonstrates wheel throwing!  \n  \nFrom Clay to Surface: Forming and Surface Techniques Demonstrated | Scope Gallery – Studio 19 | 7-9 pm  \nScope artists Ji Shin\, Peggy Reichard\, Barbara Nowak\, and Jennifer Coffin will be demonstrating various forming and surface design techniques.   \n\nPeggy Reichard – Coiling and Pinching: Ancient Technique and Contemporary Use | Peggy will share small examples of pots from various cultures\, along with a selection of her own hand-pinched work. Earthenware clay and bisque-fired pukis—small\, shallow molds used to support and shape clay—will be provided. Participants will use terracotta clay to form small disks inside the pukis. Peggy will demonstrate how to roll a coil and attach it to the rim of a base\, introducing traditional handbuilding techniques. \n\n\nJi Shin – Carving and Sgraffito | Sgraffito and freehand carving will be demonstrated\, with a focus on both pattern-making and expressive mark-making. She will provide small tiles for participants to leave their own messages—literally “scratching” into the surface as a reflection of their daily social narratives. \n\n\nBarbara Nowak – Painting Pottery with Mason Stains | Barbara applies an underpainting of slip—liquid clay mixed with ceramic stains designed to withstand high firing temperatures (up to 2200°F)—to her leather-hard forms. Working with complementary colors inspired by ocean sunsets\, she may add texture either before or after the slip is applied. Techniques include brushing directly onto the clay as well as transferring designs from newspaper onto the surface. The process is experimental and expressive\, producing richly layered color effects. \n\n\nJennifer Coffin – Brushes and Brushwork | Using her handmade brushes\, Jennifer will demonstrate brushwork with slip to decorate and enhance the clay surface. She will also display her brushes and discuss the different natural hairs used\, ranging from bear and goat to deer and rabbit. \n\n  \nChinese Brushpainting on Pottery Demonstration | Fire On – Studio 22 | 7-9 pm  \nSee how to apply brushwork with a traditional Asian technique and stroking to pottery with Tracie Griffith Tso of Fire On\, Studio 22. Griffith Tso will be using underglazes on bisque forms and participants can experiment with natural-hair\, bamboo-handled brushes firsthand.  \n  \nFiber Arts Demonstration | Potomac Fiber Arts Gallery – Studio 29 | 7-10 pm  \nJoin the artists of the Potomac Fiber Arts Gallery as they demonstrate the processes of spinning\, crochet\, and hand-stitching. They will also have fiber crafts on display!  \n  \nHow is Fine Jewelry Handmade? | Studio 205 | 7-10 pm  \nZachary Androus of Androus Jewelry will present an ongoing demonstration of the processes by which fine jewelry is handmade in silver and gold. The artist will be at his workbench with pieces in various stages of manufacture\, demonstrating the tools and techniques necessary to transform raw metal into finished jewelry.  \n  \nAdorn Studio | Studio 226 | 7-9:30 pm   \nJoin us at Adorn\, Studio 226\, for stories and participatory demonstrations.  \n  \nStudio Visit with Lori Katz | Studio 334 | 7-8 pm  \nJoin artist and ceramicist Lori Katz in her studio as she talks about the processes she uses to develop her work.   \n  \nSculpting with Salvaged Glass | Studio 335 | 7-9pm  \nArtist Alison Sigethy of Fantastical Glass will be in her studio\, working on a large glass sculpture made of salvaged glass. She’ll be coloring it with glass enamel and is share in her process with visitors.   \n  \n

Up tempo\, cheeky statuettes express excess and light engulfs the gallery with sunny eco-prints of seasonal foliage. \nGrand\, oversized vases force the timbre of decadence\, inspiring garden-party centerpieces or an entry hall presence. Come in to sample expressive\, impressive energy as artistry waxes rhapsodic over cyclical exhilaration. \nOil on canvas early Spring plein air landscape by Brianna Camp of Fairfax\, Va. \nStoneware dipped honey pot by Scott Kaye of Arlington\, Va. \nSpring blossoms mark the conclusion of Winter and serve as a traditional foundation for a Japanese ikebana floral composition in a handmade vase. The delicate harbingers of the season also gently hover\, painted on platters\, trays\, panels and canvases with the area’s traditional cherry blossom season. \nEverything is accented with breezy movement\, quickening cadence. Paintings turn plein air and dishware does al fresco. Compositions of chirpy allegro arias capture the prelude to nesting season with feathery friends alighting on tableware\, tiles and painted panels. \nHandmade tumblers are for seasonal sipping\, servers are for fruit and salads and trays for sharing charcuterie and tapas. SUMMARY:Sensing Place: 2025/26 Post-Graduate Artists in Residence Exhibition 
DESCRIPTION:Third Floor Site 3 | Opening Reception April 10 @ 7-10 p.m. \nSensing Place brings together four former Torpedo Factory Art Center artists-in-residence whose practices consider place not as a fixed location\, but as something remembered\, recorded\, felt\, and activated. Between the physical action of investigating a place and the re-creation of someplace treasured elsewhere\, these artists create work that speaks to how the treasured places we visit in our lives and memories can traverse distances both physically and metaphorically. Overall\, these artists push for a noticing of our surroundings\, at times formal\, at times spiritual\, allowing viewers to notice the air between sculpted forms\, and view place as a site of history\, emotion\, and potential reimagination. Material exploration and community-oriented gestures further support these artists’ practices as they respond to places of personal importance – sometimes even responding to Torpedo Factory Art Center itself.   \nSookkyung Park engages the quiet physicality of paper\, air\, and gravity\, using repetition and materiality to reveal how light forms can define and hold space. Comprised of smaller forms building together\, the works show evidence of hands\, slowly folding and connecting pieces of paper. Upon viewing the work\, the artist can sense potential movement\, say if a breeze were to blow\, and possibly feel the artist’s presence in the space as well.   \nJill McCarthy Stauffer reconstructs environments through a variety of materials including light and projection. Using technology to imperfectly reflect aweing moments of perception\, Stauffer weaves together natural memory\, religious symbolism\, and personal ties to landscape. Their works become tech-mediated reconstructions of experience\, asking how human forms of representation shape our sense of place.   \nMicah Meyers approaches their practice through acts of cleaning\, mapping\, and close observation\, treating care and maintenance as artistic gestures that reveal how we move through and subconsciously come to understand our surroundings. As they work\, they document and contribute to the embedded signs of past human presence in a space. They often using everyday household or construction materials in their work.  \nAdele 이슬 Kenworthy’s practice centers community and her heritage beyond a fixed place\, often presenting personal and cultural rituals as an opportunity to be human together while ensuring these rituals live on beyond a single occurrence\, through collective memory. Her practice relies on both research and personal experience\, and she utilizes embodied gestures of care as means of preserving non-dominant histories.  \nMoving between the tangible and the ephemeral\, the exhibition suggests that place is not static or singular\, but experienced and built together through material attention\, daily habits\, technological mediation\, and community. Their work reflects that it is not only where we are\, but how we discern meaning from the places we pass through and what we carry forward with us. While personal methods of sensing and processing are predominant in each artist’s work\, it’s a treasure to see the thematic overlaps as well\, further connecting their joint experience of passing along a shared space to each other over the last year of their residencies.

DESCRIPTION:The Nikki Giovanni Immersive Experience combines her poetry (as recorded by Giovanni at different times in her life) with audio soundscapes and motion graphic projections.  \nThis is a Virginia Tech interdisciplinary collaboration between a composer\, designers\, literary experts\, embodied performance artists\, and creative technologists\, converging to create a multi-sensory experience. Each projection is crafted to capture the essence of Giovanni’s poetry\, drawing inspiration from its themes\, imagery\, and rhythmic cadence.  \nAdditionally\, we utilized Virginia Tech’s University Libraries’ motion capture studios\, in collaboration with faculty and students from the School of Performing Arts\, to develop visual avatars featured in select final motion graphic works.
