SUMMARY:Alexander D'Agostino: "A Shrine to the Forgotten"
DESCRIPTION:Reception and Artist Talk: Friday\, May 12 7-10PM\nPerformance: Friday\, June 9 at 8PM \nTorpedo Factory Art Center presents the Target Gallery solo exhibition recipient\, Alexander D’Agostino with “A Shrine to the Forgotten“. Alexander’s visual and performance works often become requiems for those Witch-hunted and accused for disrupting the “moral fabric” of society\, who’s stories are often packed away in some forgotten storage facility of collective memory. In this  exhibition Alexander invites the viewer to imagine the discovery of missing pages of a sixteenth century book of spells\, along with other documents and objects found in the Torpedo Factory when it was vacant after being used as a storage facility for the FBI and Smithsonian Institute. This site specific installation in the Target Gallery consists of large textile prints\, artist books\, and sculptural works that explore hidden and erased stories\, witch-hunts\, book-bans\, and “don’t say gay” bills that will tie the Torpedo Factories’ unique history with Alexander’s practice of engaging spaces with queer history\, myth-making\, and ritual. \nAlexander will also be having a virtual talk about artistic research with the Folger Shakespeare Library with Folger fellow Mindy Stricke on Tuesday\, June 6 at 6PM. Register for the talk HERE. \nView Online Catalog\n  \nAbout the Jury Panel \nHoesy Corona is an uncategorized queer Latinx artist of Mexican descent living and working in the United States. He creates work across a variety of media spanning installation\, performance\, and video. He develops otherworldly narratives centering marginalized individuals in society by exploring a process-based practice that investigates what it means to be a queer Latinx immigrant in a place where there are few. He choreographs large scale performances and installations that oftentimes silently confront and delight viewers with some of the most pressing issues of our time. Reoccurring themes of queerness\, race/class/gender\, nature\, isolation\, celebration\, and the climate crisis are present throughout his work. Hoesy has exhibited widely in galleries\, museums\, and public spaces in the United States and abroad. \n  \nHe lived in Mexico\, Utah\, and Wisconsin\, before moving to Baltimore\, MD in 2005 to establish a professional practice in the arts. He is a recent GKFF Artist Fellow 2019 & 2020 in Tulsa\, OK. And is a former Halcyon Arts Lab Fellow 2017-2018 in Washington\, DC. He is a current Nicholson Project Artist in Residence in SouthEast DC and is a resident artist at The Creative Alliance in Baltimore\, MD where he lives and works. \n  \nLaila Abdul-Hadi Jadallah  is a seasoned arts administrator\, writer and exhibition producer\, and curator with more than 15 years of experience. As a researcher\, Jadallah is interested in cultural diplomacy; the alternative histories and contributions of diaspora communities from the Middle East and North Africa to the art historical canon; and the new visual languages introduced by contemporary MENA artists’. Her most recent projects include curating More Than Your Eyes Can See: Contemporary Photography from the Arab World an exhibition organized in partnership with Tribe Magazine at the Middle East Institute. \nShe has presented about her work\, the role of arts in education\, and as a tool for social change and cultural diplomacy at programs organized by Montgomery College\, The Middle East Institute\, ArtTable\, Inc.\, Hillyer Art Space\, and the College Arts Association Annual Meeting. She recently served on the Executive Committee of the Washington\, D.C.-region chapter of ArtTable\, Inc. and co-chaired State of Art5/DC: A Conversation at the Smithsonian American Art Museum (2019). Jadallah is a member of ArtTable Inc.\, Arts Administrators of Color\, the Brokering Intercultural Exchange Group\, and Museum HUE.  She was in the inaugural cohort at Georgetown’s Laboratory for Global Performance and Politics’ Student Fellows program (2020/2021) and a 2017 and 2019 D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities Artist Fellow. \n  \nClaudia Watts  has been a lover and patron of the arts since childhood. In 2016\, Claudia assumed the role of strategic planning and partnerships at the Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum (ACM). In this role\, she co-authored the museum’s case for revitalization with the former director Lori D. Yarrish. Claudia also worked with community organizations\, educational institutions\, and artists to create programs that supported museum initiatives. She collaborated with ESPN’s The Undefeated to produce an All-Star 2018 pop-up exhibition and developed a community documentation program for teens that received funding from Coca-Cola. She also commissioned artist\, Adrienne Gaither\, to create a mural inspired by ACM’s collection for the newly renovated community lounge. In December of 2020 Claudia accepted a new position as the Director of Culture at Eaton Hotel. \nIn addition to her work in the arts\, she served as the Managing Editor of the Washington Informer’s Bridge Magazine\, an arts and culture-focused publication\, from 2018 – 2020. SUMMARY:2022 Post-Grad Residents
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: December 17 – January 21\, 2022\nArtist Talk: Friday\, January 13\, 2023 \nThe Torpedo Factory Art Center presents the culminating exhibition for the 2022 Post-Graduate Residency co-hort: Mrinal Joshi\, Julia O’Bryan\, Kamille Jackson\, and Kiel Posner on view in Target Gallery.  \nThis residency provides a unique experience at a critical juncture in an emerging artist’s career after they graduate their BFA or MFA program\, allowing them unlimited studio access and the ability to engage with the community outside of academic context. The work on view in this exhibition will spotlight  the work and creative endeavors these four residents created during their three-month residency in studio #319. \nJoin us for a reception and artist talk on Friday\, January 13!  \n2022 Post Grad Residency Exhibition Catalog \n  \n\nAbout the Artists \nMrinal Joshi • January – March\nSpring Hill College\, 2018\nB.F.A.s in Studio Art and Graphic Design\nWebsite: 111rinal.com\n@111rinal\nMrinal Joshi is an artist and graphic designer based in Washington\, DC. Born in Kathmandu\, Nepal\, he emigrated to the U.S. at the age of 14. Mrinal’s artistic practice lies at the intersections of his lifelong fascination with culture and the collective consciousness. \nThe lighthearted synthesis and juxtaposition of classical western art and contemporary visual culture seen in his work become a vehicle to explore the temporal nature of existence with the digital era as the backdrop. His approach to and philosophy on artmaking is a meditation on mortality and change. \nMrinal holds two degrees in Studio Art and Graphic Design from Spring Hill College (2018). He has participated in several juried exhibitions throughout the country. Mrinal is currently a graphic designer with the in-house creative team at the Nature Conservancy. In his free time\, he can be found reading\, cooking\, going to museums\, hanging out or simply vibing. \n  \nJulia O’Bryan • April – June\nSouthwestern University\, 2019\nB.F.A.\, Ceramics\n@juliacreates\nJulia O’Bryan is a graduate of Southwestern University in Georgetown\, TX. Her work stems from her childhood growing up in southwest Missouri as well as from her struggle with an aggressive auto-immune disease. Her work is an accumulation of her experiences; from her childhood\, from her struggle with an aggressive autoimmune disease\, all of the things that have made her who she is. Based on the destroying and scarring found throughout her lungs and body from her struggle with her autoimmune disease\, the coral is a reflection of the beauty that can be seen through decay. The wide range of color throughout the coral on her work is meant to reflect the passage of time through the “bleaching” effect it creates. Gold accents throughout the work is meant to draw attention to the beauty in the human body over time and the beauty through brokenness that can occur throughout life. \n\n\n\nKamille Jackson • July – September\nGeorge Washington University’s Corcoran School of the Arts and Design\, 2021\nM.F.A.\, Studio Art\nWebsite: kamillesimone.com\n@ka_milleeee\nKamille Jackson is an interdisciplinary artist from northern Virginia. In her work\, cosmic colors meet checkerboards from a long-gone suburban counterculture and symbols plucked from astrology and spirituality-based imagery. Floating and loosely abstract pictures form from the amalgamation of texts conjured by black conceptual artists\, desert transcendentalists\, and queer media. Through her work\, Kamille builds a queer\, black\, mystical iconography with drawing\, painting\, writing\, and embroidery. She earned an MFA from George Washington University’s Corcoran School of the Arts and Design and a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. She recently shared a visiting artist lecture with the graduate students at Massachusetts College of Art and Design and received the Outstanding MFA Award as a participant in the Next Exhibition. She has exhibited work at The Garden\, Target Gallery\, Anderson Gallery\, Studio 23\, Bronx Art Space\, Gallery 5\, Richmond Library\, and the Refinery Space. Commissions include Justin Allen’s Black Boots’ Ekphrastic Punk EP\, Afropunk\, Elbowroom\, and Gallery 5. \n\n\n\nKiel Posner • October – December\nVirginia Commonwealth University\, 2020\nB.F.A.\, Craft and Materials Studies\n@kiel.posner\n\nArtist Bio \nKiel Posner is a queer Jewish ceramicist currently living in Bethesda\, Maryland. Their work investigates the legacy of the button factory their great grandfather worked his way up to owning after immigrating to NYC\, from Eastern Europe\, in 1912. 109 years later\, after producing for Macy’s and Disney\, what’s left of the now defunct factory are some ceramic decals and a dusty kiln. Kiel received their BFA in Craft and Materials Studies in 2020 from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond\, VA. While in Richmond they were awarded a Fellowship from the Virginia Museum of Fine arts and rented space at Shockoe Bottom Clay. Since relocating to the DMV\, they have started teaching ceramics classes at Vis Arts Rockville and The District Clay Center. \n  \n\n\n2022 Residency Jurors \nJordan Brown (she/her) is the current Director of Education and Programs at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond (VisArts). She spent her childhood in Minnesota\, but now considers Richmond her home. She has a B.F.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University in painting and printmaking and a Masters in Arts Administration from Goucher College. She is currently a board member of Partners in the Arts. She has a special fondness for all things printmaking\, and still has her own art practice outside of her role in VisArts’ education department.  \nOshun Layne (she/her) was born and reared in Brooklyn\, NYC with a passion for visual arts and its ability to communicate a sense of inclusiveness across cultures\, genders\, and generations. Over the last decade\, she has developed and nurtured an extensive career in arts leadership that includes institutional\, gallery\, and non-profit project management experiences. Through arts education\, programming\, artist development\, strategic partnerships\, and mentorship\, she has been successful in bringing multicultural and multidisciplinary art forms to diverse populations. Most recently\, she has carved out her curatorial imprint in museums and galleries regionally\, working with scores of local and international artists.  \nGraduating from Howard University with a Bachelor’s degree in anthropology\, Oshun’s educational and professional journey lead to her becoming the Director of Galleries for Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation. In this role\, she increased regional audience participation and engagement by supervision of exhibitions and programming in multiple venues such as Rush Arts Gallery in NYC\, Corridor Gallery in Brooklyn and Rush Arts Philly in Philadelphia\, PA. Prior to Rush\, she coordinated arts education programs where she oversaw the administration of educational volunteers\, docents and interns for the High Museum of Art in Atlanta.  \nOshun is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Urban Policy and Planning with an emphasis on Non-Profit Management at Hunter College. Merging cultural studies\, art\, and policy\, she seeks to create innovative pathways to bridge gaps between urban communities and private interests with a focus on arts awareness\, cultural competency\, and community partnerships.

SUMMARY:A Year In
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Reception: Friday\, August 13 @ 7pm \nTarget Gallery presents an all-media group exhibition that marks one year since COVID-19 led to shut-downs and major shifts in the U.S. This exhibition provides catharsis and an opportunity for artists to share how this year has influenced their artist practice. All works is connected to events that have happened since March 2020. \nParticipating Artists are: \nKelli Rae Adams\nMark Armbruster\nJaqui Falkenheim\nJacob Foster\nChristian Hastad\nJuan Hinojosa\nAmanda Hodes\nDayna Leavitt\nMei Wu Lemmon\nWeina Li\nRon Longsdorf\nGeorge Lorio\nKaty McCarthy\nManuela Mourao\nMeredith Starr\nBetty Vera\nSarah K Williams\nAbby Zhang \nAbout the Juror: \nNancy Daly is an artist and curator based in Washington D.C. Her current body of work examines how the development of the online social world is affecting identity and social behavior. By creating interactive machines reminiscent of outdated technology\, she addresses the contradictions present in various social media that are at once ephemeral and entirely permanent. Interactivity and the vocabulary of minimalist sculpture are key elements of her installations that challenge the viewer to look beyond the user-friendliness of online technology and consider what their participation in social media means.\n\nNancy Daly is a graduate of the Photographic and Electronic Media MFA program at the Maryland Institute College of Art. She lives and works in Washington\, D.C. where she teaches Photography\, Visual Literacy\, 2D Design and 3D Design at American University and George Mason University.\n\n\nImage Credit: Mark Armbruster\, 82 rolls\, 397 days\, 2021. SUMMARY:"We\, Too\, Sing America" by Ọmọlará Williams McCallister
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Reception: Friday\, June 11 | 7pm\nfacebook.com/torpedofactory \nIn- Person Durational Performance: 12 – 1 pm\, June 24 – July 18\, 2021 \nIn-Person Reception and Performance: Dusk (9pm)\, July 9\, 2021 \nView Online Catalog \n\nTarget Gallery’s 2021 solo exhibition recipient is artist Ọmọlará Williams McCallister (pronouns: O/love/beloved) who will be presenting a multisensory installation\, “We\, Too\, Sing America”\, which will include visual\, sound\, and interactive elements including durational performance. The installation is a continuation of  the artist’s ongoing fiber-based series Domestic Work\, which confronts the extraction of emotional labor\, caretaking and other domestic work from Black women that is expected\, depended upon\, normalized and then erased in public and private spaces. \n“We\, Too\, Sing America will be a memorial to the small everyday acts that we have undertaken to support ourselves and each other as we have collectively moved towards building a better future and weathered the storms of COVID\, of white supremacist anti-Black terror\, of all of the intersecting forms of oppression that we face/d over these past many months. In this work I will use accumulation and repetition of ritual acts\, art objects\, images\, and sound to explore the relationship of the individual act\, individual person\, individual moment to the collective\, and to collective world building.” \n— Ọmọlará Williams McCallister \nThe jury panel for this exhibition was: Antonius-Tin Bui\, Michele Carlson\, and Deirdre Darden. \nFeatured image courtesy of the artist.

ONLY if you flip and create artwork in the back of the panel—you are required to install a sawtooth hanger yourself. Any artwork without proper hardware will not be accepted (a requirement ONLY to those creating work on the back/inside of the panel). \n \n  \n  \n  \n3. All artwork must be hung/displayed as a square (no diamond oriented work please)\, all the artwork is hung on a grid\, so it must be hung as square. \n \n  \n  \n4. Artwork should not protrude more that 3 inches off the front of the panel (for sculptural/ mixed media) – it must be able to fit inside a large Priority mailbox (which is what we will use to ship the work upon it being sold). We will have a large Priority mailbox in the gallery to test the artwork to make sure it will fit. If it does not fit\, with some wiggle room for padding\, it will not be accepted into the exhibition.\n6. No weapons or sharp objects (i.e. nails\, sharp edge glass) can protrude from the piece.\n7. The content of artwork should be appropriate for all ages\, so please no graphic content. \nDownload Guidelines\nQuestions? \nContact: Leslie Mounaime\nPhone: 703.746.4584\nEmail: leslie.mounaime@alexandriava.gov
