ASO Sympatico

#asosympatico

The Torpedo Factory Art Center welcomes back ASO Sympatico for a special night of music. This performance group was developed as a partnership between the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra and the Alexandria City Public Schools to provide high-quality music education for local elementary students who are underrepresented minorities or at-risk youth. This performance will feature three of their music ensembles: Singing Eagles, Strings at Sunrise, and JABBA.

ASO Sympatico seeks to create safe spaces where students can take risks and make strong choices, while promoting student ownership of their role in an interdependent ensemble. Ensembles are hosted at John Adams Elementary School, a Title I and minority-majority school that benefits from a longstanding dual-language program and a Kennedy Center arts-integration partnership (Changing Education through the Arts).

This event is co-sponsored by the Torpedo Factory Art Center as part of the Community Partnership Program.

Tom Teasley: Drumming Through the Neighborhoods

Critically acclaimed percussionist Tom Teasley comes to the Torpedo Factory Art Center for a special one-night engagement.

Supported by a generous grant from the Alexandria Commission for the Arts, Tom will celebrate the cultural diversity of Alexandria, informed by his multiple tours as a cultural envoy for the U.S. Department of State. Performing with more than a dozen instruments from places as diverse as Africa, India, the Middle East, and Asia, his merging of digital technology with ancient instruments creates a performance that spans cultures and time. This performance will draw heavily from his recent tour to Korea and music for the Constellation Theatre’s forthcoming production of Journey to the West.

About Tom Teasley:

Described in the Washington Post as a “multi-instrumental genius,” Tom Teasley is a five-time recipient of the Fulbright-Hayes Award for historic performances in The Middle East, five-time nominee and two-time winner of the Helen Hayes Award, and three-time recipient of the Washington Area Music Award for World Music Instrumentalist. Sebastian and Shai from Maps of You

Second Thursday featuring Maps of You

Maps of You is an electronic duo based in Boston and Washington, DC. Their music is a concoction of electronic pop, soulful bass lines and funk driven beats.

Sebastian and Shai met through the Berklee College of Music’s network and hit it off musically right away. Shai focuses on the lyrics and songwriting while Sebastian is the wizard that gives the songs life through his production.

The name Maps of You is derived from the idea that everyone has an internal map guiding them through this pilgrimage called life. As you embark on your life’s journey, you will realize that music is intricately entwined into the ebb and flow.

We all have that album or song that colors our memories of that one rebellious summer, the loss of a loved one, the celebration of a new season of growth and of course love and heartbreak. And so, Maps of You seeks to create music that is a positive backdrop to your life. Music that will harmonize discordant moments, songs that will unravel your twists and turns and melodies that will ease dissonance in your journey.
