Studio 8 - New Project Studio

Juried by Amy Lokoff, independent curator and former visual arts coordinator at the Anacostia Arts Center, this 3-month artist residency is dedicated to fostering the next generation of artists in the DC/Maryland/Virginia area. 

New Project Studio Workshop: Han Sol Jeon – “Finding Shapes”

New Project Studio Resident Han Sol Jeon will offer a hands-on drawing workshop. Participants will use gouache paints and pencils to draw on a large-scale sheet of paper on the wall. The final piece will be incorporated in a new collaborative work created by Han!

In Our Eyes: Workshop with Shani Shih, Michelle Chen, and Chinatown Art Studio

Studio 8 - New Project Studio

New Project Studio artists Shani Shih and Michelle Chen present In Our Eyes, an interactive workshop series centered on the power of the arts to express identity, values, and personal/collective histories and visions. Through these workshops, the artists will 1) lead participants in reflection on the stories and experiences that have shaped who we are and who we are becoming, and 2) guide participants in the use of visual language to tell their stories. Mediums of exploration include: painting, collage, pen and ink. Each workshop is in collaboration with a separate non-profit or activist group committed to uplifting individuals in the DC/Alexandria area.

How does an artist succeed and create momentum when they are just starting out? What resources and tools do they need? How can they be socially conscious while also making a living? These questions and more will be discussed in an Artist Roundtable with current "New Art/New Voices" residents Shani Shih, Michelle Chen, and Han Jeon. Moderated by "New Art/New Voices" juror Amy Lokoff.

The Torpedo Factory Art Center welcomes back The HRCHY to the New Project Studio for a follow-up to their successful 2016 project, "Connecting the Dots," an ongoing exhibition dedicated to highlighting urban artists from unique backgrounds living in the DC, MD, and VA metropolitan area.

In celebration of the opening of the Connecting the Dots 2 exhibition in the New Project Studio (Studio 8) and in conjunction with Howard Universitys Homecoming Week, the HRCHY, an all-women DC creative agency (and Howard Alumni), partners with the Torpedo Factory Art Center to extend the “Dots” exhibition beyond its four walls for one night to display additional works of art in the Art Center halls.
