Mim received her degree in Fine Arts and
German at The George Washington University. She then went
to Thailand with the Peace Corps where she gained considerable
influence from Asian themes and marveled at the Thai's ability
to be totally self-sufficient and in harmony with nature.
After marrying a Thai, she appreciated her mother-in-law's
talents in creating clothes by growing the mulberry tree,
raising the silkworms, dying the threads with nature's dyes,
and weaving the silk under the house on stilts on her handbuilt
loom. Everything was handmade. Mim also loved the Celadon
ceramics of the region. After working as Peace Corps staff,
returning to Thailand for another 5 years, she decided to
study clay at the Torpedo Factory Art League School. She joined
Hollin Hills Pottery in 1991.
Mim loves designs that consist of simple shapes, clean lines,
black and white, texture versus non-texture, porcelain clay,
wings, shoulders and especially stripes. She is continuously
learning, experimenting, and challenging herself with new
goals. She believes that non-functional ceramics is functional
in that it is necessary food for the soul.
